BASE | Aggies Keep Gaels From Completing Comeback
4/4/2023 11:21:00 PM | Baseball
MORAGA, Calif. – Saint Mary's Baseball clawed back one run at a time against UC Davis after falling behind early but came up short of a comeback in a 6-4 loss on Tuesday.
The Aggies formula for success has been the long ball, and they struck with a two-run homer in the second inning and a solo shot in the third to lead 3-0. That would not be the end of their rally in the third however, as a two-run double and an RBI groundout stretched their lead to 6-0.
The Gaels would stop the scoring there though for UCD, and slowly began to chip their way back. SMC would get a run in fourth, sixth, eighth, and ninth, but could never quite keep the line moving to produce a crooked number and complete the comeback.
In the fourth Blake McDonald plated Coleman Schmidt on a sac fly after Schmidt doubled and advanced to third on a ground out. McDonald would do it again in the sixth when his sac fly in foul territory of left field scored Christian Almanza to make it 6-2.
In the eighth the Aggies would turn a double play to shrink a Gaels' rally, as they would score just one run again, this time on a wild pitch to plate Schmidt. A groundout scored their run in the ninth as well as Saint Mary's was never able put together a big inning.

The Gaels will resume WCC play with a trip to Pepperdine from Thursday April 6 to Saturday April 8.
