MORAGA, Calif. – Saint Mary's baseball dropped the rubber match on Mother's Day in the conference and home finale as San Diego won 10-8 in a senior day shootout.
Â
Before the action got underway on Sunday, the Gaels celebrated their seniors. Ryan Taurek, Riley Lamb, and Bill Ralston were all honored at Brother Ronald Gallagher Stadium. The mothers in attendance were also invited for a ceremonial first pitch for Mother's Day, closing the festivities.
Â
The scoring started early and was led by the Torero offense who bounced back from the Saturday shutout. An Austin Smith single scored two for the rebounding offense, and then an RBI double from James Gurevitch scored the third of the inning and ended Garret Plata's day early.
Â
After taking the early 3-0 lead, San Diego continued to add in the third and fourth innings. Gurevitch delivered again with an RBI triple in the third, then Dustin Allen homered in the fourth giving them a 5-0 lead.
Â
The Gaels offense would get things going in the fifth against the San Diego bullpen. A Bill Ralston sacrifice fly would score Dalton Mashore and get the Gaels on the board. Coleman Schmidt would then add a three-run home run to make it a 5-4 ballgame and bring the energy from the newly welcomed crowd.
Â
San Diego answered right back in the next half inning, putting up four of their own and making it a 9-4 deficit. The four run inning was highlighted by Allen's inside the park home run that pushed the lead back to five runs.
Â
The fireworks would continue half an inning later once again, this time in the bottom half of the sixth when Mashore delivered a 3-run home run of his own, bringing in Jared Mettam and Eddie Madrigal.
Â
Once again San Diego would answer with one run this time coming from an error.
Â
Nathan Chong then started off the bottom of the seventh with a solo shot way into left field, but that would be it for the Gaels offense in the afternoon. The rest of the Torero bullpen would shut the door to take the series at the end of conference play.
