SAN MATEO, Calif. — The final full week of May was a big one for two Saint Mary's beach volleyball standouts. Allie Cataldo and Karmin Brown earned academic awards from both the West Coast Conference and College Sports Communicators. Cataldo was named First Team All-Academic from the WCC while Brown was named to the honorable mention list, and both were named to the Academic All-District team from CSC.
Cataldo broke out during her second season at Saint Mary's, compiling 15 wins with two different teammates. Her first wins of the season came with Sadie Shipman against Stephen F. Austin in Hawaii, where the duo won twice against Shipman's former team. Cataldo also played a crucial role in beating #18 Pepperdine at the West Coast Challenge, scoring a win against the Waves. With multiple partners, Cataldo went 7-2 against WCC teams, losing only to the eventual conference champions LMU twice. She holds a 3.80 GPA as a biology major.
Brown had a banner year during her fourth as a Gael, which landed her Second Team All-WCC honors for the first time in her career. She piled up 16 wins which was good for second best on the team. Brown was also paired up with a freshman all season long in Hannah Couch, and the two of them found immediate success, picking up a win against #9 Stanford in the opening week of the year. She also scored the clinching point against #18 Pepperdine to beat the Waves and advance to the title match of the West Coast Challenge. She holds a 3.59 GPA as a business administration major.
In order to qualify for the WCC All-Academic team, student-athletes must meet the following criteria: a minimum 3.20 cumulative grade point average (GPA) based on the most recently completed term at the time of the nomination; be a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials; have at least sophomore athletic and academic standing with at least one year in residence completed at the nominating institution; and participate in at least 50 percent of the institution's completed contests.
The standards for Academic All-District are a bit higher. To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his or her current institution. Nominated athletes must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games, and no student-athlete is eligible until he/she has completed one full calendar year at his/her current institution and is at least a sophomore academically and athletically.
