MORAGA, Calif. – Saint Mary's Women's Basketball's
Maia Jones has been named the Shamrock Office Solutions Player of the Week as voted on by the SMC staff after her 22-point performance in the Gaels win over Santa Clara.
Â
Jones got the scoring started for Saint Mary's, draining her first of four three pointers on the day. She'd also help the Gaels finish strong by scoring eight of SMC's first 11 points of the fourth. She'd finish the game with 22 points on 7 of 11 shooting from the floor, including 4 of 7 from deep, and had two assists and two steals in 33 minutes played.
Â
The Gaels fed the ball to Jones in the paint in a couple of sequences late in the third quarter and early in the fourth, as the redshirt freshman showed off her back-to-the-basket game with an array of spin moves and turnaround jumpers to go along with her 3-point shooting prowess.
Â
It was her second game in double figures scoring on the season, after blowing up for 12 points in just 17 minutes at Rice. The New Zealand native also hit a pair of threes with three rebounds in the Gaels loss at Pacific. On the season she is shooting 36.4% from downtown.
Â
SMC is back in action when they host the Portland Pilots this Saturday, January 3 at 5:00 p.m.
Â
Also nominated: Augustas Marciulonis – Men's Basketball, James Watney – Golf, Paulo Hugo Etchecoin – Men's Tennis, Olivia Rook – Women's Tennis.
