GAELS OUTLOOK
Gaels Go 2-1 Over 3-Game Road Trip…
For the second time this season, Saint Mary's played three games in a single week as they did so to open the season recording wins over Wyoming, San Francisco State and Chico State at the start of November. This past week, after starting things off with a road defeat to 16th ranked USC on Tuesday, they bounced back with two more road wins over San Jose State and Grand Canyon to improve to 7-5 on the season. Bench scoring was a key factor in the two wins as Emily Foy went off for a season high 16 off the bench in their 58-53 win over the Spartans while graduate transfer Malia Latu went for 18 to lead all scorers in their eight-point win over Grand Canyon on Sunday.
Once again, defense told the story as head coach Jeff Cammon and his squad held their opponents to 53.5 points on 35.7% shooting in their two wins. Offensively, the Gaels are averaging just 58 points this season but have been incredibly efficient, shooting it at 43% through eleven games. In their two wins, they combined to shoot 48.5% and recorded 15+ points in six of their eight quarters of basketball. Seven players are averaging at least five points per game for the Gaels as opposing teams will have to continue to prepare for any player to go off on any given night.
Saint Mary's will have a chance to go 9-4 with two more home wins over Fresno State and New Mexico State to cap off a successful non-conference slate before their WCC opener on Sunday, December 28th against the Portland Pilots.
Emily Foy and Malia Latu Record Season Highs in Pair of Wins…
Scoring has been by committee so far for Saint Mary's but the Gaels got a pair of standout performers this week in their wins over San Jose State and Grand Canyon. Reigning 2025 WCC Sixth Woman of the Year in Emily Foy went off for a season high 16 points in the Gaels five-point win over the Spartans. Foy looked like her 2024-25 self, scoring at all levels in her 28 minutes off the bench. She finished the night 6-for-13 from the field with a pair of big three-pointers including one at the 3-minute mark in the fourth quarter to put Saint Mary's up for good. Foy also added a season high five rebounds and a steal to help end the Gaels four-game skid.
A new face would burst onto the scene for Saint Mary's in their eight-point win over Grand Canyon as grad transfer Malia Latu scored a season high 18 points off the bench. Latu was a dynamic scorer for fellow WCC member Santa Clara a season ago and got things going Sunday afternoon with a game high 18 points on 5-for-13 shooting. The Palo Alto native showcased her ability to take players off the dribble, finishing 6-7 from the stripe in her 28 minutes of action. She also connected on a pair of three-pointers en route to the Gaels 62-54 victory over the Lopes.
Latu was also named this week's Shamrock Office Solutions Student-Athlete of the Week as she paced the Gaels in scoring averaging ten points on 42% shooting over her three games.
Series History…
Saint Mary's is 7-3 over Fresno State dating back to the 1999-2000 season. The last time the two teams met was back in 2021 as the Gaels came away with a convincing 81-69 victory in UCU Pavilion. Saint Mary's has been rather dominant historically speaking at home against the Bulldogs, recording a 7-1 home record with their only home defeat coming back in 1988. Fresno State's last win over Saint Mary's came in 2020 in a 90-71 victory as the Bulldogs will look for their first road win over the Gaels in over 30 years.
ABOUT THE BULLDOGS (5-4, 0-0 MW)
Fresno State enters the week with a 5-4 record as they embark on their final two non-conference games against Saint Mary's on Wednesday and then Chicago State later in the week on Saturday, December 13th. The Bulldogs were picked to finish 9th in this year's Mountain West preseason poll after winning 19 games and losing in the semifinal of the 2025 Mountain West Tournament, falling 45-57 to 2-seed Wyoming.
Fresno State started the 2025-26 campaign 3-0 with dominant wins over DII rival Fresno Pacific, Bakersfield and Seattle U. They would go on to drop their next three games though in the reverse fashion, losing convincingly to BYU, no. 25 Washington and Santa Clara. Since, they've gone 2-1 to put themselves above .500 but fell to another WCC school in Pepperdine last week, 45-65 in Fresno. Saint Mary's will be the fourth WCC school to take on the Bulldogs as they hold a current record of 1-2. Fresno State has a pair of double-digit scorers in Emilia Long and Ashlyn Rean who are averaging 12.7 points per game while Rean leads the team with seven boards per game. Rebounding could prove to be a pivotal stat for both teams as they both are averaging 34 boards per game. Oddly enough, Fresno State has also not played a game within 13 points, winning in big fashion and losing in the same way.
Wednesday's game can be streamed live on ESPN+ and tickets can be bought online at smcgaels.com/tickets. Be sure to follow your Gaels on Facebook, Instagram, and X to get all the latest Saint Mary's athletics updates and information.
