MGOLF | Gaels Make Final Round Push to Finish t-5th at Leadership and Golf Collegiate Championship
10/23/2024 4:26:00 PM | Men's Golf
SEASIDE, Calif. - Saint Mary's wrapped up the Leadership and Golf Collegiate Championship at Bayonet on Wednesday by jumping four spots on the team leaderboard to finish in a tie for fifth place. The course played fair and true with great conditions on Monday and Wednesday. The Gaels found themselves in 9th place after a tough couple of rounds but finished 284 (-4) as a team to crack the top five along with Santa Clara.
With rounds under par, Connor Reis and Avery Lazarski finished inside the top-15 individually to lead the team. Zack Missigman and Ian Bruchhauser (I) finished t-24th to round out the top-30 for Saint Mary's and their third top five finish this fall.
ROUND ONE
The weather in Seaside was exquisite for three of the four days and Monday was one of them. As a result though, the greens were firm and if out of position off the tee, the course would make you pay. The Gaels got off to a tough start finishing the front nine 3-over-par but made a nice push around the turn to climb as high as fifth in the standings. As a team, they went 5-under on the par five 10th which included an eagle from Zack Missigman.
They would slip back to eighth place by the end of the day recording five bogeys in the final five holes. Missigman led the way with a 71 (-1) while Connor Reis finished even par with four birdies on the day.
ROUND TWO
Round two's theme was one step forward, two steps back for Saint Mary's. As a team they were just one stroke better as Avery Lazarski finished even par for the low round of the day. Tuesday got off to a wacky start with an hour plus fog delay and then the teams had to pivot to a shotgun format to finish before darkness.
Luckily, the rest of the field would also struggle on the day as not one team put together a round under par with San Francisco and BYU as the lone teams to record rounds of even par. The Cougars would remain in first place at 7-under but kept the rest of the field in contention heading into the final round. The Gaels would fall one spot into 9th place but were still within striking distance of a top five finish.
ROUND THREE
The weather would be stellar once again on Wednesday and with more accessible pins, teams could be aggressive and try to go low. With another shotgun format, Saint Mary's would record eleven birdies from their four counting scores on the first nine holes and jump into a tie for seventh. Aidan Lee got off to a hot start with birdies in two of his first three holes and Connor Reis was three under through his first nine holes.
As the team made the turn, Avery Lazarski and Go Nakatsukasa would put together solid performances in their final nine holes. Lazarski would go bogey free in his final nine to finish with a 71 (-1) while Nakatsukasa recorded three birdies in his final six holes to pull his round back to even par. Reis would make the turn and record an unfortunate eight on the par five first, but bounced back nicely with two birdies to still finish in red figures. Lee would birdie the par five eighth to move to 2-under and record his lowest round of the week.
As a result, Saint Mary's jumped four spots to finish in a tie with Santa Clara in fifth place. Four WCC schools would make up the top six spots as Pacific took home the team title at 9-under-par. The lead got down to as low as 4-under but the Tigers recorded three eagles on the par five 18th to retake the lead and finish the day with a 13-under final round, the lowest team score of the tournament.
Individually, head coach Scott Hardy had Ian Bruchhauser and sophomore James Williams compete. Williams competed in his first event of the season while Bruchhauser finished just four over for the week, good for t-24th place. Zack Missigman also finished t-24th with a final round 75 (+3). LOOKING AHEAD
The Gaels will head into the winter break and prep for the spring season starting in February. After five fall events, they would record three top five finishes and a pair of third place finishes at the Island Resort Intercollegiate and the Mark Simpson Invitational.
