MORAGA, Calif. - One of the all-time great Saint Mary's baseball players, Corbin Burnes, signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks in free agency on Friday ahead of the 2025 MLB season. Burnes joins the D-Backs on a six-year $210 million dollar contract and will play for his third team in his seven-year MLB career.
After being involved in a blockbuster trade before the 2024 season and signing with the Baltimore Orioles, Burnes put together a Cy Young caliber season finishing with a 15-9 record, a 2.92 ERA and 181 strikeouts in nearly 200 innings pitched. He ranked inside the top-five for AL pitchers in ERA, wins, innings pitched and games started with 32. Burnes finished fifth in the AL Cy Young voting and has now finished in the top-10 of the CY Young voting for five straight years. He was also named to his fourth consecutive All-Star game dating back to the 2021 season.
Corbin Burnes will return to the National League after making his MLB debut and spending six seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers. Saint Mary's is excited to have Burnes join the NL West and make several appearances here on the west coast. He will join a solid rotation in Arizona featuring Zac Gallen, Merrill Kelly and Eduardo Rodriguez who combined for 22 wins in 2024. Gaels head coach Eric Valenzuela had this to say about Corbin's success from his time as a Gael to now his eighth season in the major league's.
"The Diamondbacks not only got a great pitcher but also a great competitor, great teammate, great son, great husband and great father. We are extremely proud of Corbin for all of his success as all of our young players here at Saint Mary's look to uphold the same values on and off the field".
Burnes played three seasons for the Gaels from 2014-2016. He ended his collegiate career in dominant fashion with a team leading 2.48 ERA, nine wins, three complete games and 120 strikeouts good for third most in a single-season. He would be named to the 2016 All-WCC First Team before being drafted in the fourth round by the Milwaukee Brewers later that spring. Catchers and pitchers are slated to report for spring training on February 10th with opening day scheduled for March 27th.
