STANFORD, Calif. — For the third and fourth time this weekend, the Gaels (4-2) battled to the very last point of their matches at the Battle of the Bay, falling to #6 TCU (7-1) 3-2 before defeating Oregon (2-7) 3-2. For the weekend, the Gaels went 3-1, moving their record to 4-2, their best start since 2018.
The Gaels once again started off the day as the first match of the event, taking on sixth ranked TCU. Through the first three flights, Hawley Harrer and Hannah Couch picked up a come-from-behind three set victory to bring the score to 2-1 in favor of the Horned Frogs. The match would come down to the one and five pairs, with the Gaels needing wins from both to secure the upset. The Gaels would split those groups, with Paola Peralta and Nya Crump winning a three set thriller 17-15 in the final set, with the Gaels ultimately falling 3-2. Despite the defeat, this was a massive showing for the Gaels, who narrowly missed an upset over a top-10 program.
Rebounding from their early loss, the Gaels responded with a 3-2 victory over Head Coach Janice Harrer's former team, the Oregon Ducks. The two and four pairs of Hawley Harrer/Hannah Couch and AJ Slojkowski took care of business to open up the match, with the Ducks responding in the three spot to bring the score to 2-1, in favor of the Gaels. Sedona Sherman and Sadie Shipman would go three sets, but ultimately fall, leaving the match in the capable hands of Peralta and Crump. The duo once again needed three sets, but were able to outlast the Ducks in a 15-10 third set, securing the victory and the 3-1 weekend for the Gaels.
For the weekend, Peralta and Crump when unbeaten (4-0), while Harrer and Couch went 3-1. Up next, the Gaels will head to Hawaii for the Queen's Cup, starting in the afternoon of Thursday, March 7.
