SEATTLE – Saint Mary's Baseball took three of four games at Seattle University this weekend, winning the finale 15-4 to secure their third-straight series win to start the season.
Â
The Gaels racked up 13 hits for their 15 runs, pouncing on any mistake the Redhawks made to increase their advantage. They struck first again in game four on an RBI double by
Christian Almanza to drive in
Gavin Napier who was hit by a pitch.
Â
SMC took advantage of some Redhawks mistakes in the third inning after
Brian Duroff reached on an error,
Coleman Schmidt tripled him home and then scored on a wild pitch for a 3-0 lead. The Gaels kept pouring it on in the fourth, after
Jared Mettam and
Tanner Griffith walked and the Redhawks committed another error.
Ryan Pierce doubled in two runs, followed by another error and a
Nathan Chong double to plate two more runs to go up 8-0.
Â
Seattle would get three runs in the bottom of the fourth off of starter
Jason Reitz, but SMC would get one back in the fifth when Griffith scored on a wild pitch. SU would get a fourth run in the bottom of the inning, but
Ryan Wiltse replaced Reitz and ended the inning with the Gaels still up 9-4.
Â
Reitz went 4.1 innings, allowing four runs on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Wiltse pitched a scoreless 2.2 innings allowing just one walk, and
Shawn McBroom made his SMC debut by pitching a scoreless eighth and ninth inning.
Â
A
Dalton Mashore double and a Mettam sac fly put Saint Mary's up 11-4 in the sixth. A sac fly from Griffith and a two-RBI single for Napier made it 14-4 in the eight, and
Aiden Taurek's first collegiate home run capped off the scoring in the ninth.
