ROW | Gaels Come Out On Top Against Defending NCAA Division II Champs
4/13/2024 7:57:00 PM | Women's Rowing
HUMBOLDT, Calif. - The Saint Mary's Women's Rowing team had a big momentum shift in the middle of the season by coming out on top against the defending NCAA Division II Champions, Cal Poly Humboldt.
The Gaels first varsity 8+ took the win with a time of 7:22.2, beating the Lumberjacks by 11.9 seconds. This boat contained Skye Kirsten as the coxswain, Hathaway Scarpine as the stroke, Katie Ferbet, Katelyn Robertson, Hanna Kügler, Natalie Sanchez, Kendall Brazeel, Maria Moreno, and Carolyn Huckel as the bow.
The second varsity 8+ did not hold back, defeating Humboldt by 30 seconds coming in at 7:33.0. Mavis Read-Kinney lead SMC as taking the coxswain position, Alyssa Teague as the stroke, Faith Freligh, Ava Delucchi, Olivia Watson, Val Hill, Maggie Farritor, Lea Glafkides, and Naomi Seivold as the bow.
The first varsity 4+, fell short against the Lumberjacks, finishing with a time of 9:02.3. Madison Sciba was the coxswain, Madison Ciccolella as the stroke, Ilayda Ozbilgin, Kaitlin Quezon, and Shelby Fong as the bow.
After today's match, Head Coach Brian Ebke stated, ""We had a great day of racing at Humboldt and we're very proud of our team's results. After a couple weeks off we were excited to get back on the racecourse to compete against the reigning Division 2 National Champions, Cal Poly Humboldt, and it felt great to come away with big wins against the first and second eight. The varsity four made a few good improvements and raced hard against a fast Humboldt four. At this point in the season wins are hard to come by, and this was a satisfying reflection of the training we've put in in the last month."
The Gaels will be back in action next weekend for the Triton Invitational.
