BREMERTON, Wash. — In need of a solid performance to secure a spot at the NCAA Regionals, Saint Mary's Golf got out on the right foot, as they sit tied in third place through the first 36 holes with an impressive -15 score. The Gaels came into the tournament with the fifth highest ranking of the eight WCC teams, but continue to defy expectations, outplaying San Francisco and tied with LMU, who both outrank them.
Through the first nine holes of the day, the Gaels struggled to find their footing, sitting in sixth out of the field of eight. The back nine, however, was an entirely different story, as Saint Mary's caught fire, led by Kristian Bressum. The junior out of Denmark shot a -4 32 on the back nine to set the tone for the Gaels. Back in the clubhouse through round one, the Gaels sat right in the middle of the pack at fourth at -3.
Starting on the back nine for round two, the Gaels continued their hot play, propelling all the way into second through the first 12 holes of the round. Despite a bogey on his first hole, Bressum shot up to -7 at the turn, to lead the tournament at the time, with Jack Jerge not far behind him at -6, thanks to an eagle on the fifth. The eagle by Jerge was one of just eight through the first two rounds of the tournament. The front nine again cooled off the Gaels, as they fell back into a tie for third with conference favorite LMU at -15. Jerge and Bressum both sit tied in second individually at -8. Jerge's 65 in round two was good for the best round in his SMC career. Coming off of pacing the Gaels to a win at the El Macero Classic, the true freshman Jerge is picking the right time to play his best golf.
The Gaels will get things going at 9:10 AM tomorrow morning, in need to maintain position in the top-four to make it to Sunday's final round of match play. They currently trail tournament leader San Diego by 11 strokes, and are ahead of the next closest trailing team, Pacific, by eight
