LAKE NATOMA, Calif. - The Saint Mary's Rowing Team competed at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championship this past weekend, with the Gaels placing fairly well in each event.
SMC started off the event with the 1v8+ boat coming in right under seven minutes, 6:59.90, finishing in fifth place in front of Portland, Seattle University, and Santa Clara. The Gaels second varsity 8+ boat placed fifth, at 7:15.46, 25.78 seconds faster than Seattle University. Saint Mary's varsity 4+ clocked in at 8:23.45.
The Gaels ended up competing in two pairs in the Varsity Pairs securing second and third place out of six. The four that competed in this event were Hathaway Scarpine, Katie Ferbet, Carolyn Huckel, and Natalie Sanchez. SMC A's boat finished with a time of 8:42.44, 1.22 seconds behind UCI A, who took first place. SMC B's boat finished with a time of 8:50.42.
The Novice 4+ boat, which features all freshmen, clocked in just under eight minutes with a time of 7:59.14, taking second place out of six.
After this weekend's WIRAs, Head Coach Brian Ebke stated "WIRAs is always a fun regatta for our team and this weekend was no exception. A highlight of the weekend was our second and third place finishes in the pairs event, thanks to strong performances by Hathaway Scarpine, Katie Ferbet, Carolyn Huckel, and Natalie Sanchez. We were also super excited about our Novice 4+ event that showcased our freshmen, boding well for the future of our team. Our Varsity 4+ stepped up big and closed the margin between us and Portland. Our 2v8+ had a tough race and made a few mistakes that we'll fix before WCCs. Our 1v8+ had our best race of the year in heats, but didn't quite put it together in the finals, but still finished in front of one of our main conference rivals Portland. Everybody's excited to hit the next few weeks hard in preparation for WCCs."
The Gaels look ahead where they will compete one last time for the season at the West Coast Conference Championships on May 18th at Lake Natoma.
