GAELS OUTLOOK
Gaels Add a Pair of Road Wins to Record…
Saint Mary's came away with both a 2-1 victory over San Diego and a 1-0 shutout win against WCC leading Pepperdine in their two-game SoCal road series. In their faceoff with the Toreros, the Gaels controlled much of the action, outshooting San Diego 23-11. Sydney Middaugh led the attack, tallying six shots and scoring both goals to secure the victory.
In their meeting with the Waves, the Gaels came away with a win off of an early goal from Emmie Ennis that proved to be the difference maker. The win marked the Waves' first conference loss of the season and snapped a seven game unbeaten streak dating back to early September. The victory was Saint Mary's first win over Pepperdine since 2018 and marks the Gaels 10th shutout of the season.
Sydney Middaugh Earns WCC Offensive Player of the Week…
Following her outstanding performance in the match against San Diego, Sydney Middaugh was named the West Coast Conference Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week. Middaugh is now tied for third in the WCC in goals, tied for fourth in points with 16, and ranks second in shot attempts with 46 so far on the season. Her brace against the Toreros marked her second of her career and the conference weekly award was her first of her three-year collegiate career.
Saint Mary's Receiving Votes, 38 in RPI; At-Large Conversation Begins…
As Saint Mary's continues to surge through conference play, they have quickly played themselves into an at-large conversation with a 10-2-3 overall record. After their road win over WCC leaders Pepperdine this past weekend, the Gaels jumped to their best RPI ranking of the season at 38 and were receiving votes in this week's United Soccer Coaches poll for the first time since 2021.
Historically, the West Coast Conference has been a mutli-bid league for 33 consecutive seasons with Santa Clara and Pepperdine representing the league's two bids in 2024. The Waves still hold a two-point lead in the conference standings but with quality wins over then 16th ranked Georgetown, 9-win Boston U and now Pepperdine, Saint Mary's is in a great position to play their way into an NCAA Tournament appearance. The Gaels have only made the postseason tournament three times and have not been since 2001.
Series History…
Over the past ten years with the Tigers, the Gaels hold the upper hand with a 5-2-3 record and an eight-match unbeaten streak. The match in the 2024 season between Saint Mary's and Pacific ended in a 2-1 win for the Gaels, with Briana Salvetti scoring a brace and being named the WCC Offensive Player of the Week the following week.
The year prior, the Gaels earned a 2-0 shutout against the Tigers thanks to two goals from Sydney Middaugh. The last time Pacific won in Moraga was back in 2015.
ABOUT THE TIGERS (4-6-6, 1-3-4)
Pacific currently holds an overall record of 4-6-6 and a conference record of 1-3-4, ranking them ninth in the WCC standings. The Tigers past three matches have all ended in a draw, with the most recent being a 0-0 tie with Oregon State. Their most recent win came in week three of conference play against Santa Clara where they came away with a 2-1 victory. Midfielder Whitney Garn and forward Sierah McCallum currently lead the charge for the Tigers offensively with two goals a piece.
Jeff Freeman is in his first season as head coach of the Tigers after spending 14 seasons with the University of Illinois. Throughout his time coaching, Freeman has helped coach six NCAA Tournament teams, a Big Ten championship squad, an MVC championship team, five Conference Players of the Year, and multiple nationally ranked recruiting classes.
The Gaels will host the Tigers on Saturday, November 1st. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 PM and the game can be streamed live on ESPN+. Tickets can be purchased at smcgaels.com/tickets.
