VB | Gaels Get First Look at Local Rivals Pacific and Santa Clara
10/8/2025 11:36:00 AM | Women's Volleyball
MORAGA, Calif. — WCC play now sits in week three, and after the Gaels (2-13, 0-4 WCC) opened the season with a pair of games on the road and spent week two at home, will now get a split week in week three, heading to Stockton to take on Pacific (7-8, 1-3 WCC) on Thursday evening before returning home to face Santa Clara (7-8, 2-2 WCC) on Saturday night. In the hunt for win number one in WCC play this year, the Gaels will look to mimic the success they've had against the two programs in recent history, going a combined 6-1 against the two over the last two years.

HOME SWEET HOME
After playing their first 13 games away from UCU Pavilion, the Gaels were able to play their first two home matches of the season on October 2 and 4 against San Diego and LMU. While the Gaels did drop both of those contests, their numbers improved massively while playing in front of an average attendance of 1260, including a record 1560 for the home opener. At home this season, the Gaels have averaged 12.5 kills per set, 14.3 digs per set and 2.7 blocks per set, compared to 11.4, 10.9 and 1.3 in their first 13 matches on the road. After playing as far away from home as North Dakota, the Gaels will hope that this positive home trend will continue both for their remaining home contests, and local road contests, now not traveling further than the state of Washington for the rest of the year.
BANE REACHES 1000 KILLS
Genevieve Bane entered the Gaels October 4 match against LMU with 995 career kills, and, despite swinging just 20 times with a position change to opposite, reached the 1000 kill mark with her opening score of the third set. Bane already reached the 1000 points and 100 ace mark in this season full of milestones for the redshirt senior out of Danville. Bane already ranks 9th in program history with 3002 attacks in her career, and ranks fifth with 117 aces. She needs just 33 more kills and 59 more points to enter the top-10 in program history in both of those categories. Bane is also the first Gael since Lindsey Knudsen to reach 1000 kills. Knudsen achieved this mark in 2018.
COACHES CORNER
ABOUT THE TIGERS
Saddled with a three game losing streak against the Gaels, Pacific enters this matchup with the Gaels with a 7-8 record, and similarly to Saint Mary's, have played just two matches at home. Greg Gibbons is now in his 16th year at the helm of the Pacific program, and will have a chance to reach 250 wins with a pair of victories this week. Coach Gibbons saw five of his seven starters graduate, and one transfer, but returns starting libero Jayhlin Swain, who leads the WCC in digs per set and ranks second in total service aces. As such, the Tigers lead the conference in digs per set, opponents hitting percentage and service aces as a team as well. This will be the 29th all-time meeting between the Gaels and Tigers with the Tiger narrowly leading the series 15-13. The Gaels have won each of the last three meetings, and eight of the last 12.
ABOUT THE BRONCOS
Coming off of a signature win last week against Pepperdine (their first win over the Waves since 2017), Santa Clara is riding momentum heading into a week where they will see their two fellow Bay Area WCC foes San Francisco and Saint Mary's. Head Coach Erin Lindsey is in year seven with the program, making her the fourth longest tenured coach in the conference, and returns her four best defensive players from last year, digs leaders Lexi Trapani and Macy Hinshaw and blocks leaders Grace Flanagan and Layla Truitt. Hinshaw has been the standout in the early goings of WCC play for the Broncos, moving from being a 6-2 setter to playing in a 5-1 rotation, and leads the conference in assists. Having a veteran setter has really helped the Broncos break in their three new starting pin hitters, who all saw limited to no action a year ago. This upcoming meeting between the Gaels and Broncos will be the 79th all-time, with Santa Clara leading it 45-33, but Saint Mary's winning seven of the last 10 clashes.
