MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's Women's Cross Country team is embarking on their next 6k race as they prepare to take on the SF State Invitational on Friday, October 10th at 3:30 PM. This will be the second time that the Gaels will take on the course at Golden Gate Park, after taking part in the season opening USF Invitational.
The Gaels are coming off of their performance at the UC Riverside Invitational where they finished 17th in a field of 24 teams and earned a handful of personal best times in the 6000 meter race. It was veteran Kaylee Barnes who started the scoring for Saint Mary's as she shot past a total of 25 runners from the first 2K split to the finish, earning her spot in the top 50 at 44th, and finishing with a time of 21:13.9. Finishing next for the Gaels was Courtney Fitzgibbon who crossed the line in 21:35.8, a personal best time, after pushing past 31 runners in the final 4000 meters. Freshman Zoe Leach finished third for Saint Mary's, as she clocked in at 21:41.6 for her own PR. Rounding off the scoring for the Gaels were freshmen Maya Crimin (21:55.8) and Kelsea Cummings (22:06.0), who both set personal best times. Joining the top five finishers, Jane Carney (23:06.7) and Flavia Linares (23:28.4) also earned their personal best time.
Making an appearance in San Francisco will be senior Andrea Villegas, sophomores Ava Irwin and Alexis Ortiz, and freshmen Peyton Miles, Emma West, and Kylie Wisely. Of these runners, Villegas holds the fastest 6k time which she earned at the Bronco Invitational last season, crossing the line in 21:45.2. The last time the Gaels took on the SF State Invitational was back in the 2021 season where they finished 9th out of 12 competing teams.
The SF State Invitational will take place at Golden Gate Park on October 10th at 3:30 PM. The race will be run on the same course that was used for the 2009 NCAA Division II West Region Championships. It will start and finish in Speedway Meadow. The first 1.85K will be a loop around the polo field and up through the woods back to the meadow. Each course will then consist of 2K loops through Speedway Meadow, Lindley Meadow and the surrounding dirt trails. On the last lap, runners will head back down Speedway for the last 400m. The course consists of rolling terrain along grass fields and dirt trails.
