WXC | Young Gaels Run Mature Race to Finish 7th at WCC Championship

SPOKANE, Wash. — The Saint Mary's Women's Cross Country team turned in a strong performance at the West Coast Conference Championships, earning 7th out of 12 competing teams, led by a youthful squad with four of the top five finishers being freshmen.
It was Courtney Fitzgibbon who led the charge for the Gaels. The freshman paced Saint Mary's from start to finish, passing 13 runners over the course of the race to place 43rd overall with a time of 22:09.3. Fellow freshmen Zoe Leach and Maya Crimin followed close behind, finishing 50th and 51st overall and crossing the finish line in 22:26.9 and 22:29.3, respectively. Next in for the Gaels was Jane Harig, the lone non-freshman to factor into SMC's scoring, who recorded her personal best in the 6k race, clocking in at 22:35.4 for a 58th place finish. Rounding out the scoring for Saint Mary's was Kelsea Cummings as she crossed the line in 23:30.4 at 79th overall.
As a team, the Gaels showed great maturity, running their race, and slowly by surely picking off teams who might've jumped out of the gates too hot. Through the first kilometer, Saint Mary's found themselves in 10th in the 12 team field, but leapfrogged up to seventh heading into the final kilometer stretch, and held off a surging Pacific team by just one point to maintain that spot at the finish line.
With four freshman and one sophomore making up the team's top five finishers, the Gaels' performance in Spokane highlights a bright future for the program. The young core gained championship experience, setting a strong foundation for the seasons ahead.
Using the momentum from their finish at the WCC Championships, Saint Mary's will push forward into their race at the NCAA West Regionals taking place on Friday, November 14th at Haggin Oaks Golf Complex in Sacramento.
