MORAGA, Calif. — After a promising performance at the West Coast Conference Cross Country Championships that showcased the potential of a young roster, Saint Mary's is set to compete at the NCAA West Regionals.
In just her fourth collegiate race, freshman Courtney Fitzgibbon led the charge for the Gaels in Spokane, pacing Saint Mary's from start to finish and passing 13 runners over the course of the race to place 43rd overall with a time of 22:09.3. Next in for the Gaels were fellow freshmen Zoe Leach (50th, 22:26.9) and Maya Crimin (51st, 22:29.3). Sophomore Jane Harig finished close behind for Saint Mary's, earning her personal best time of 22:35.4 for a 58th place finish. Freshman Kelsea Cummings rounded out the Gaels scoring, crossing the finish line in 23:30.4 at 79th overall. The efforts earned Saint Mary's 7th place finish out of 12 competing programs at the WCC Championships.
Saint Mary's lineup for the NCAA West Regionals will feature another young group. Freshmen Courtney Fitzgibbon, Zoe Leach, Maya Crimin, Kelsea Cummings, and Emma West, along with sophomores Jane Harig and Ava Luczkow will all represent the Gaels. Leach enters the race possessing the fastest 6k time, which she recorded earlier this season at the Bronco Invitational when she led the Gaels across the finish line.
Last season, the NCAA West Regionals took place in Colfax, Washington, where Saint Mary's finished 24th out of 29 teams. Harig is the lone returner to the NCAA West Regionals.
The NCAA West Regionals will take place on Friday, November 14th at Haggin Oaks Golf Complex in Sacramento. The women's 6k is set to start at 9 AM PST and consists of two 3k loops.
