WBB | Balanced Scoring and More Defense Leads to Gaels 4-0 Start, 51-41 Win over UC Riverside

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Saint Mary's returned to the road Friday night and got revenge on UC Riverside after their defeat to the Highlanders in 2024. The Gaels put on another defensive clinic and got balanced and timely scoring throughout their lineup to take down UCR 51-41 to improve to 4-0 on the season. Their undefeated start is their best since 2015 when Saint Mary's started 5-0 and they will look to match that start Sunday afternoon back inside UCU Pavilion against Nevada.
Addi Wedin got the start and led the team with nine points on 50% shooting while Edie Clarke finished with eight points, five boards and a career high six steals. Clarke continues to be a menace on the defensive side of the ball as her and the Gaels helped force a season high 23 turnovers while holding the Highlanders to 34% shooting and just 2-of-22 from three-point range. Jada Hunter and Malia Latu each had six points to round out the scoring for the Gaels in their ten-point victory.
FIRST HALF SMC 28-24 UCR
Both teams finished the opening quarter knotted at eleven as Saint Mary's shot 35% from the field. A clutch three-pointer though from second-year guard Jada Hunter helped tie the game at eleven with just ten seconds remaining.
The offense picked up for both sides in the second quarter but a 54% quarter for the Gaels would help give them a four-point lead at the break. Saint Mary's finished with 17 points in the second quarter including a big three ball from Addi Wedin. Wedin went on to lead the Gaels with nine points on the night on 50% shooting.
Amy Kurkowski got in on the action as well with another late bucket to push the Gaels lead to four points inside the final minute of the first half.
FINAL SMC 51-41 UCR
The turnovers started to pile up for UC Riverside in the second half and at the center of that defensive pressure was sophomore forward Edie Clarke. Clarke finished with a career high six steals including a scoop-and-score in the third quarter to give Saint Mary's an eight-point lead.
Both teams would combine for just 19 points in the fourth quarter but once again, Saint Mary's put the clamps on and held UC Riverside to just 30% shooting in the final quarter including a combined 17 points in the second half. Abigail Shoff drilled a wing three-pointer to push the Gaels lead to 12 for their largest of the game. Saint Mary's allowed just five points over the final four minutes of regulation in route to their 51-41 road win over the Highlanders.
