WBB | Gaels Improve to 5-0 for First Time Since 2015
11/16/2025 9:28:00 PM | Women's Basketball
MORAGA, Calif. - Defense prevailed again as Saint Mary's held on for the 56-50 victory over Nevada to improve to 5-0, their best start since 2015. The Gaels forced 26 turnovers and held the Wolf Pack to just 37% shooting, showcasing their stout defense once again in week two of the 2025-26 college basketball season.
Sophomore Edie Clarke was dominant again, leading the team with 16 points and six steals as she led their 1-3-1 zone defense. Addi Wedin was effective off the dribble and added ten points while Emily Foy chipped in nine points off 4-7 shooting.
FIRST HALF 24-21 UNR
Both teams combined for just six made shots over the first ten minutes but the Gaels hit a pair of three pointers to help contribute to an early four-point lead. Into the second, Edie Clarke helped turn defense into offense with a steal and a score to push the Gaels lead to eight points. Saint Mary's matched their scoring total with 12 points in the second but Nevada was able to shoot 50% from the field for 13 second quarter points, pulling within three at the break.
FINAL SMC 56-50 UNR
Both teams scored a game high 16 points in the third quarter. The Wolf Pack scored an early bucket to make it a one-point game but the Gaels answered on the other end with a push shot from Clarke off a sweet dish from point guard Malia Latu to push the lead back to three.
Minutes later in the third, Addi Wedin started to get more aggressive off the dribble and converted a sweet spin move inside to give Saint Mary's a five-point lead. Wedin finished with ten points in her 17 minutes of action and scored four points in the quarter.
The guard play really picked up for the Gaels in the second half thanks to Mauriana Hashemian-Orr and Jada Hunter. Hashemian-Orr converted an early layup in the quarter while Hunter finished with four points and a pair of steals in the second half.
Saint Mary's grew their lead to as many as 15 points under the three-minute mark in the fourth quarter. The Wolf Pack were aggressive late and it nearly paid off as they forced five turnovers over the final two and a half minutes of regulation, cutting the deficit to as little as six points. Although the ending wasn't as clean as head coach Jeff Cammon would've liked, the Gaels flexed their defensive tenacity once again, forcing a game high 26 turnovers and allowing just 50 points. Defensively, Saint Mary's has allowed 50 points or fewer in all five games this season and as a result, are a historic 5-0 to start the year.
Edie Clarke continues to be a problem for teams on both ends of the floor, leading the way with a career high 16 points and six steals for the second consecutive game. Addi Wedin added ten points while Emily Foy and Mauriana Hashemian-Orr combined for 15 points off the bench. Very quietly, the Gaels were also a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line as UCU Pavilion has treated both Saint Mary's basketball teams well from the charity stripe as the men's team just broke the program record for consecutive free throws made with 30 straight over a two-game span earlier this season.
For the first time since 2015, Saint Mary's is 5-0 to start the season and will take that undefeated streak into Berkeley next Thursday against the Golden Bears.
