GAELS OUTLOOK
3-0 Start to 2025-26 Season…
Saint Mary's has started the 2025-26 season 3-0 for the first time in a decade. During the 2015-16 season, the Gaels started 5-0 as they will look to match that start with a pair of games this week against UC Riverside and Nevada. The Gaels did their damage on the defensive end, holding all three opponents to under 50 points as they currently rank 31st in the nation in scoring defense (44.7).
Head coach Jeff Cammon and his squad frequently switch between zone and man but the likes of Edie Clarke, Mauriana Hashemian-Orr and Jada Hunter have contributed to a swarming defense that has forced nearly 20 turnovers per game through their three-game start. The Gaels are also +11 on the glass, vastly improving in a category that hindered them a season ago.
Through three games, Mauriana Hashemian-Orr leads the team in scoring with 10.3 points per game. Hashemian-Orr has come off the bench in all three games and provides a different look at the point guard position compared to first-year transfer Malia Latu who has started in all three contests for the Gaels. Addi Wedin and Edie Clarke are next up, averaging over eight points per game to contribute to a well balanced scoring offense thus far.
Return of the W3din's…
The Wedin sisters are a well known name here in Moraga with all three having played in the Saint Mary's women's basketball program. Taycee Wedin got things started as a five-year vet for the Gaels from 2018-2023 and set the program record in made three pointers. Addi Wedin was next and committed to Saint Mary's as a true freshman for the 2021-22 season while her older sister Ella Wedin started her collegiate career at LMU for the 2023-24 campaign. Ella and Addi would reunite last season after Ella transferred into Saint Mary's after her lone season with the Lions. Both Wedin's have dealt with season ending knee injuries throughout their respective careers but they were able to take the floor together during the first week of the 2025-26 college basketball season.
Ella suffered a knee injury in December of 2024 while Addi was recovering from a knee injury of her own sustained during the tail end of the 2023-24 season. Addi returned to the court in thrilling fashion in the Gaels season opener against Wyoming where she led the team with 13 points and a pair of three-pointers to lead them to the 56-47 road victory. Meanwhile, Ella made her season debut in their home opener against Chico State where she played ten minutes in their 67-49 win.
Despite not recording a point, Ella bounced back with an impressive showing just two days later with a career high 14 points and four made three-pointers in a dominant 39-point win over San Francisco State. The duo combined for 40 points and nine made three-pointers over the first week of the season. The Wedin sisters not only overcame a ton of adversity to make it back to the court but they will also provide great depth to the Gaels perimeter shooting this season and should be key contributors throughout the offense.
Bench Production…
Head coach Jeff Cammon rolled with the same starting lineup in his first two games and made just one change in their most recent game against SF State but he has shown no hesitation to go to his bench, consistently going 10-11 players deep. The Gaels currently average over 40 points per game from their bench to lead the WCC and rank 21st in Division I.
Mauriana Hashemian-Orr is averaging nearly 20 minutes per game off the bench and leads the team in scoring with 10.3 points per game. Jada Hunter has also contributed off the bench, leading the entire team with 22 minutes per game and five steals. Combine those two with some perimeter shooting from the Wedin sisters and the Gaels can give teams several different looks night in and night out.
Series History…
Saint Mary's and UC Riverside met last season in a low scoring affair in which the Highlanders came out on top, 49-41. The two will meet in Riverside for the first time since 2005 and this will be just the fourth all-time meeting between the two programs. The Gaels will look for their first ever road win over UCR Friday night.
Saint Mary's is 8-5 all-time against Nevada with their last win coming in 2022, 67-58. The Gaels are also riding a three-game win streak over the Wolf Pack dating back to 2020. The two programs met in four consecutive seasons from 2019-2022 but have not met since. Nevada will seek their first road win over Saint Mary's since 2011.
ABOUT THE HIGHLANDERS (Big West)
UC Riverside enters week two of the 2025-26 regular season winless after a pair of three-point defeats to Cal Baptist and Arizona. Both games came down to the final possession but the Highlanders suffered some crucial free throw misses that could've tied both games late in the fourth quarter. They'll make their home debut this Friday and host Saint Mary's for the first time since 2005.
The Highlanders have three players averaging double-figures through their first two games. Kaylani Polk leads the way with 12.0 points per game while Seneca Hackley and Aaliyah Stanton are both averaging ten points. Despite averaging just 56 points through two games, UCR is only allowing 59 points with a pair of one-possession losses to start the season. Riverside was picked to finish 7th in the Big West preseason poll after a 17-win season in 2024-25. The Highlanders are led by Brad Langston in his sixth season with the program and third as head coach after taking over before the 2023-24 season.
ABOUT THE WOLF PACK (Mountain West)
Nevada will start their two-game week with a home game against fellow WCC member LMU on Thursday, November 13th before they head to Northern California to take on Saint Mary's Sunday afternoon. The Wolf Pack are 1-1 to start their 2025-26 campaign with a win over DII Cal State San Marcos to open up the season before falling to Sacramento State by 20 on the road. Nevada was picked to finish 10th out of 12 teams in this year's Mountain West preseason poll after an 11-21 season a year ago.
Through two games, the Wolf Pack are led by a pair of double-digit scorers in Skylar Durley and Ahrray Young. Durley leads the offensive surge with 14.0 points per game while Young is averaging 13.0 points and 7.0 rebounds as a redshirt junior transfer from Tulsa. Nevada is led by nine-year head coach Amanda Levens. In her time leading the Pack, Levens has produced 12 All-Conference players, five professional players and is third in program history in wins with 117.
