GAELS OUTLOOK
5-0 Start, First Time Since 2015…
It hasn't been the prettiest basketball but Saint Mary's has been a defensive juggernaut over the first two weeks of the season, allowing just 45 points per game for the third best scoring defense in the country. As a result, they are 5-0 to start the season for their best start since 2015.
Over these five games, the Gaels are allowing just 45 points, forcing 21.4 turnovers, recording 12.2 steals shooting 41% from the field. Sophomore forward Edie Clarke currently leads the team with 9.8 points and 4.6 rebounds per game, but it has been a complete and total team effort. Head coach Jeff Cammon has consistently played 10-12 players deep in all five games with nine players averaging at least four points per game. The Gaels will be chasing a 7-0 start with two more wins for their best start since the 2013-14 season.
Edie Clarke Named Shamrock Student-Athlete of the Week…
For the first time in her Saint Mary's career, sophomore forward Edie Clarke was named this week's Shamrock Office Solutions Student-Athlete of the week after leading the Gaels in scoring and collecting a whopping 12 steals over their two wins against UC Riverside and Nevada.
The Gaels are off to their best start since 2015 and a big part of their success on both ends of the floor is second-year Gael Edie Clarke. Clarke possesses all the physical tools standing at 6-4 and as a true sophomore, she is coming into her own as an interior scoring threat and a dynamic defender, leading Saint Mary's with 9.8 points, 4.6 rebounds and 4.2 steals per game.
50 Points or Fewer in Five Straight Games…
For the first time in program history, Saint Mary's women's basketball has held their opponent to 50 points or fewer in five straight games, breaking the original record of three consecutive games set back in 2000. Head coach Jeff Cammon has always been a defensive minded coach over his career but in year three in Moraga, he is taking the Gaels defense to new heights.
Saint Mary's currently ranks third in the entire country in scoring defense, allowing just 45 points per game. The Gaels also rank second in the West Coast Conference, forcing over 24 turnovers per game. Sophomore forward Edie Clarke leads the conference with 21 steals and ranks second with 4.2 per game as the Gaels are proving to be one of the most stout defenses on the west coast heading into week three of the college basketball season.
Series History…
It has been a trying period for the Saint Mary's Gaels as they are just 3-14 against Cal dating back to 2001. The Golden Bears are currently riding a seven-game win streak dating back to 2015 as the Gaels will look for their first win over Cal in a decade when they beat the Golden Bears 64-63 inside Haas Pavilion. Saint Mary's dropped last year's matchup as the two teams met on opening day of the college basketball season, falling 90-58 inside Haas Pavilion.
ABOUT THE GOLDEN BEARS (ACC)
Cal enters the week with a 4-1 record with wins in each of their last four games. The Golden Bears traveled to Paris for the season opener and fell 74-65 to Vanderbilt but have since rattled off four straight wins. Cal handled Sacramento State to start the streak 69-52 and went on to defeat Pacific, Charlotte and most recently Harvard.
Cal is averaging 67.8 points per game and is led by junior guard Lulu Twidale who is averaging 13.1 points and five boards per game. The Golden Bears were picked to finish 12th in this years ACC preseason coaches poll and had true freshman Aliyahna Morris named to the preseason All-Freshman team. The Rancho Cucamonga native has scored double figures in two of their five games including a career high 17 points in their 69-44 win over Charlotte.
Charmin Smith is in her seventh year leading the Cal women's basketball program and is coming off of her best season with the Golden Bears, guiding them to 25 wins and an NCAA Tournament appearance.
