WBB | Saint Mary’s Goes Toe-to-Toe with Cal but Suffers First Defeat of Season
11/20/2025 3:33:00 PM | Women's Basketball
BERKELEY, Calif. - Saint Mary's went into Berkeley for their toughest test of the 2025-26 season and after trailing by as many as 16 points, the Gaels went on a momentous 11-0 scoring run from the end of the first half into the start of the third quarter to take a five-point lead. Cal scored just ten points in the third quarter as the game was tied heading into the final ten minutes, 49-49.
The Golden Bears were able to post 21 points though with a pair of clutch three pointers and some work at the free throw line to pull away late, hanging on for the 70-62 victory. The Gaels unbeaten streak to start the season would come to an end but not after a valiant effort in Haas Pavilion, shooting 52% from the field and having seven players finish with at least five points. Abigail Shoff caught fire during the Gaels scoring run to finish with 10 points on 5-of-9 shooting while 2025 WCC Sixth Woman of the Year Emily Foy led the team with 12 points off the bench on 67% shooting.
FIRST HALF SMC 31-39 CAL
Saint Mary's matched Cal's intensity from the jump, finding themselves down three after the first media. Addi Wedin and Malia Latu had early buckets to get the scoring started and then the Gaels cashed in on a turnover as Latu found a cutting Edie Clarke in transition to make it 8-11. Cal started 85% from the floor with just one missed field goal while Saint Mary's was 4-for-8 over the first six minutes of the game.
Junior guard Emily Foy gave the Gaels nice life off the bench, scoring four points in the first quarter to keep the Gaels within striking distance. The lead would balloon to eleven though for Cal as they were catching the Gaels in rotation and hammering the paint thanks to Sakima Walker who had ten first quarter points.
The Golden Bears pushed their lead to 13 in the early minutes of the second quarter, once again killing the Gaels inside, outscoring them 24-16 in the paint. Cal nailed a pair of three pointers late in the quarter to push the lead to as many as 16 but Saint Mary's would find a way to buckle down and end the half on a 7-0 scoring run, cutting the deficit to just eight points.
Saint Mary's forced two turnovers over the final minute and a half and got buckets from Jada Hunter and Georgia Grigoropoulou as they stole the momentum just before the halftime buzzer. Grigoropoulou hit a hook shot inside over Cal's Sakima Walker just as time expired to cap off the 7-0 run into the break.
FINAL SMC 62-70 CAL
Saint Mary's continued to take the air out of Haas Pavilion as they added to their scoring run with jumpers from Abigail Shoff and Jada Hunter. Cal finally ended the drought with a layup inside from Walker but Saint Mary's kept their foot on the gas and went into the first media of the third quarter on an 11-2 run. In what felt like a blink of an eye, the Gaels found themselves up 42-41, forcing a Cal timeout from head coach Charmin Smith.
After Cal's lone bucket to end the initial scoring run that stemmed from the first half, Saint Mary's went on to score another eleven unanswered points to put them up five with four minutes to play in the third. Shoff caught fire from the midrange and drilled another jumper to give the Gaels a 46-41 lead.
The quarter nearly ended with an SMC turnover but sophomore guard Mauriana Hashemian-Orr leapt into the air to deflect Cal's pass and got rewarded for her efforts with a wide open layup underneath the basket to tie the game at 49 heading into the fourth. Saint Mary's held Cal to just ten points in the quarter on 27% shooting to get right back into the game.
As the game opened up and fatigue began to play a factor, scoring runs were prominent for both sides. Cal took back control of the game with a crucial 7-0 run to start the fourth quarter. The Gaels found ways to stop the bleeding and stay within a couple of possessions but struggled to string together multiple scoring possessions in a row. Addi Wedin drilled a three pointer in transition after a Cal turnover to cut the deficit to two.
Both teams hit scoring lulls in the middle portion of the fourth quarter but Cal hit a pair of three pointers and wore the Gaels down inside, finishing 5-7 from the free throw line and 7-15 from the field. Saint Mary's appeared to run out of gas, shooting just 35% from the field in the fourth and also struggled at the line, finishing just 57% from the stripe.
Scoring was balanced yet again as Jeff Cammon went eleven deep and had seven players with five or more points in the game. Emily Foy led the team with 12 points off the bench while Abigail Shoff sparked for ten points and four boards. Edie Clarke was held to five points but was dynamic once again, leading the team with eight boards, four assists and a pair of steals.
