GAELS OUTLOOK
First 5-0 Start Since 2015…
The Gaels undefeated streak came to an end last week after their 70-62 defeat to Cal, but they got off to a historic start with their 5-0 start. Head coach Jeff Cammon led the Gaels to a 5-0 start for the first time in a decade, allowing just 45 points and forcing 21.4 turnovers per game during that stretch. The offense has continued to develop but it has been the defense that has led them to their low scoring wins.
Sophomore forward Edie Clarke was averaging 9.8 points and 4.6 rebounds per game to lead the way but it has been a complete and total team effort early in the season. Cammon has consistently played 10-12 players deep in all six games now with eight players averaging at least four points per game.
Gaels Come Up Short in First Power-Four Game Against Cal…
Saint Mary's nearly came away with their first win over Cal since 2015 after erasing a 16-point deficit in the second quarter. The Gaels went on a 7-0 run to pull it to eight to close the first half and then extended that scoring run to eleven to start the third quarter. Emily Foy led the Gaels with 12 points off the bench while Abigail Shoff had ten points and four boards to lead all starters.
The Gaels went on to take a five-point lead in the third and went into the fourth with the game tied at 49. Cal was effective inside as Sakima Walker led all scorers with 25 points and nine rebounds and the Golden Bears also hit a pair of threes in the fourth to pull away for the ultimate 8-point victory.
Saint Mary's put up a great effort in their first power-four matchup of the season but saw their undefeated streak come to an end, falling to 5-1 heading into this week's Hoopfest Challenge. The Gaels still shot 52% from the field and had seven players score at least five points as they continue to be a balanced attack.
Balanced Scoring to Start Season…
Through six games, the Gaels might not have one go-to scorer but they are showcasing they can score 1-10 and any given player can rise to the occasion. Seven different players are averaging at least five points per game with three averaging seven or more.
Sophomore forward Edie Clarke leads the team with 9.0 points per game and has taken great strides since her freshman season. The Melbourne, Australia native represents a dynamic two-way threat for the Gaels, leading their 1-3-1 zone defense while also shooting 58% from the field. Along with Clarke are guards Mauriana Hashemian-Orr, Jada Hunter and Malia Latu who are all averaging more than five points per game. The Gaels are still trying to spark their perimeter shooting, converting at just a 26% clip, but four-year veteran Addi Wedin has given life in that department in her first action since the 2023-24 season. Wedin leads the team with eight three pointers at 44% and is also averaging 8.8 points per game.
Series History…
Saint Mary's and Oregon have met six times since 2002 as the Ducks hold a record of 4-2 over the Gaels. The two programs last faced off in 2018 when the Ducks came south to Moraga and defeated Saint Mary's 79-55. Prior to that though, the Gaels had a two-game win streak with wins in 2011 and 2012, both coming on the road in Eugene. This will be the first neutral site matchup in their series history.
As for North Texas, Wednesday will mark the first ever matchup between the Gaels and the Mean Green. Additional game information, schedule, tickets and more can be found at hoopfestbasketball.com.
