WBB | Gaels Drop Another Battle After Third Quarter Lead, 53-71 to Ducks in Hoopfest Opener
11/25/2025 2:43:00 PM | Women's Basketball
FRISCO, Texas – Saint Mary's went toe-to-toe with another power-four opponent for the second consecutive game but a massive 25-point fourth quarter for Oregon propelled them to the 18-point victory. The Gaels held a lead as many as nine points in the third quarter and just like Cal last Thursday, they went into the fourth with the game tied at 46. The Ducks opened the fourth quarter on a 9-0 run and went on to hold the Gaels to just two made field goals in the period to run away with the win.
Sophomore forward Edie Clarke emerged as the Gaels lone double-digit scorer, finishing with 14 points and five boards. Senior transfer Georgia Grigoropoulou added nine points off the bench as she added nice life offensively when Clarke got into foul trouble. Amy Kurkowski hit a pair of three-pointers to finish with six points while Malia Latu had five points and a team high five assists.
FIRST HALF SMC 31-29 ORE
Similar to their game against Cal the week prior, Oregon opened up the game on an 11-0 run, forcing a quick timeout from SMC head coach Jeff Cammon. Cammon swapped out the entire starting lineup for the Gaels and they responded in a big way, answering with 11 straight points of their own including a pair of three-pointers from Amy Kurkowski.
They put the cherry on top thanks to a buzzer-beater three from Emily Foy to take a 14-13 lead into the second quarter. The Gaels got it done on the defensive end once again, forcing four turnovers and holding the Ducks to just one made field goal after the six-minute mark. Saint Mary's would end the period on a 14-2 run to get right back into the game.
The Gaels momentum rolled into the second quarter as they went on an 8-2 run to force a timeout from Ducks head coach Kelly Graves, pushing their lead to seven. Edie Clarke was at the center of that surge as she went on a solo 8-0 run while also helping force six turnovers in the period.
The game featured runs from both teams as Oregon did well to weather the storm and respond with a 7-2 run to pull the game to within two. Under the three-minute mark, the Ducks swung the game with back-to-back scores including a three-pointer from Janiyah Williams but Saint Mary's responded with a three of their own thanks to Ella Wedin. Wedin pulled a quick trigger on a three from the wing and got nothing but the bottom of the net to tie the game at 29.
To help end the half, Mauriana Hashemian-Orr snagged a steal in transition and threw a pass ahead to Jada Hunter for the transition layup to put the Gaels back up two. They would get a series of stops to go into the half with a 31-29 lead over the Ducks. Saint Mary's held Oregon to just 2-of-10 shooting from beyond the arc while on the offensive end, the Gaels shot an efficient 52% and also cashed in on four three-pointers to swing the momentum at the break.
FINAL SMC 53-71 ORE
The Gaels historically have put together quality third quarters and were able to carry that trait into this game, opening up on a 7-0 run to start the third and take a nine-point lead, their largest of the game. The scoring came by committee as Abigail Shoff and Edie Clarke scored buckets inside while Addi Wedin hit a three in transition after a forced turnover.
Oregon was able to hit the reset button again and go on a 10-4 run to cut the deficit to three. The Gaels did good to weather the storm and find answers on the offensive end, but another 7-1 run over the final two minutes would knot the game at 46 heading into the fourth.
Despite another gritty showing against their second straight power-four opponent, the fourth quarter belonged to Oregon as they scored a game high 25 points on 75% shooting. The Ducks switched to a 3-2 zone that really rattled the Gaels offense late as they were only able to make two shots over the final ten minutes. The Ducks outscored the Gaels 25-7 in the quarter and grew their lead to as many as 20 under the two-minute mark.
Edie Clarke led the team with 14 points and five boards while Georgia Grigoropoulou had nine off the bench. The Gaels bench outscored Oregon's 25-23 and the two teams were even in the paint with 30 points each, but five turnovers in the fourth and hot shooting from the Ducks offense did the Gaels in as they fell 53-71 for their second defeat of the season.
