WBB | Gaels Closeout Hoopfest Challenge with Dramatic Double OT Defeat to North Texas
11/26/2025 4:43:00 PM | Women's Basketball
FRISCO, Texas - Saint Mary's put up another strong defensive performance in their finale of the Hoopfest Challenge but fell in a double overtime thriller to North Texas, 65-67. The two team's first ever meeting will be a memorable one as they traded clutch shot after clutch shot but the Gaels will leave Frisco winless as they fall to 5-3 on the season.
For the first time this season, the Gaels had three players in double figures including a team high 16 from Addi Wedin. Edie Clarke and Jada Hunter each had 11 to lead the SMC starters. As a team, Saint Mary's shot a season high from three, hitting nine three-pointers at 45% while holding the Mean Green to just 26% from beyond the arc.
The game came down to the very last second as Edie Clarke saw a turnaround jump shot fall off the rim as time expired, sealing the two-point win for North Texas.
END OF REGULATION SMC 53-53 UNT
Unlike their previous two losses, Saint Mary's dictated most of the game Wednesday afternoon, taking a 34-25 lead into the half. The Mean Green have not been known as a highly effective perimeter shooting team in the early going of the season, as the Gaels held them to just 2-9 from that mark over the first 20 minutes.
On the flip side, the three ball was falling for the Gaels and it really began to open up UNT in transition. Saint Mary's hit five first half three-pointers including a pair from junior guard Jada Hunter. The Gaels outscored the Mean Green 24-18 in the second quarter and led by as many as eleven, as they were leading this dance in Frisco.
An early Achilles heel this season for Saint Mary's has been rolling waves of momentum and slow starts to the second half. Both were factors again tonight as they let North Texas back in the game with a 17-point third quarter. The Mean Green shot just 36% from the field and failed to hit a three-pointer in the third quarter but they were able to get downhill and rack up 12 free throw attempts in which they made nine of. Their third quarter surge helped knot the game at 42 heading into the fourth.
Both teams combined for just 22 points in the fourth quarter but clutch shots within the closing minutes kept the game highly entertaining. Addi Wedin converted a tough and-1 layup to put the Gaels up 50-49 with five minutes remaining and then after a bit of a scoring drought, Wedin drilled a three ball to put Saint Mary's up four with two minutes remaining.
North Texas was able to answer though with a 4-0 run including a coast-to-coast layup with 49 seconds remaining to tie the game at 53. Both teams recorded stops on the ensuing possessions and after forcing a miss with just 0.8 seconds left on the clock, the Gaels grabbed the rebound and called timeout to advance the ball. Mauriana Hasemian-Orr got the ball off the inbounds and hit a floater as time expired which appeared to give the Gaels the buzzer-beater victory, only for it to be reviewed and correctly waived off, sending the game to overtime.
SECOND OVERTIME SMC 65-67 UNT
The game would require two more overtime periods before being decided. The first overtime period would end with the game tied at 61 and featured clutch shooting late in the period. A combined three three-pointers would be made over the final minute and a half. Amy Kurkowski hit her lone three of the game to tie things up at 58 only for North Texas to answer with a long ball of their own to push their lead back to three with one minute remaining. With time winding down in the shot clock on the ensuing possession, Jada Hunter would cash in on her career high third triple of the game, tying the game at 61.
The Gaels would ultimately get another stop on the defensive end, forcing a miss as time expired to send the game to a second overtime period.
North Texas started the second overtime on a 6-1 scoring run to take a 67-62 lead under the three-minute mark. After UNT center Megan Nestor fouled out in the first overtime period, Edie Clarke was starting to get more run inside and was able to draw a pair of shooting fouls. Clarke went 2-for-4 though on her attempts as the Mean Green still held a four-point lead. After a steal from Wedin on the defensive end, Hashemian-Orr came down and found Clarke on a nice pick-and-roll to lay it in and make it a two-point game with 1:30 remaining.
Both teams would trade empty possessions and after a timeout from Gaels coach Jeff Cammon with four seconds remaining, Clarke would get the inbound and miss a turnaround jumper at the buzzers, giving North Texas the wild double OT victory.
For the third consecutive game, Saint Mary's entered the fourth quarter with the game tied, doing so against two power-four opponents and then tonight against North Texas. Addi Wedin came off the bench to lead the team with 16 points while Clarke and Hunter each had 11 to lead all starters. Saint Mary's was better from the field (40%) and from three (44%) but North Texas had a season high at the free throw line with 14 made free throws and nine extra shot attempts, turning the Gaels over a game high 25 times.
