GAELS OUTLOOK
Hoopfest Challenge Recap…
Saint Mary's went into Thanksgiving week with a 5-1 record after a narrow seven-point defeat to Cal for their first loss of the season. The Gaels spent the first half of Thanksgiving week in Frisco, Texas for a pair of games against Oregon and North Texas in the Hoopfest Women's Challenge. The Gaels overcame an 11-point deficit from the first quarter and even took a lead as many as nine points in the third quarter before entering the fourth with the game tied at 46. Oregon exploded though for a 25-point fourth quarter as the Gaels only made two field goals over the final ten minutes, ballooning the Ducks lead to 18.
Saint Mary's turned around the next day to conclude their MTE in their first ever matchup with the Mean Green of North Texas. Both teams came in with similar defensive makeups and it would take double overtime to decide the game as North Texas held on for the 67-65 win, holding the Gaels scoreless over the final minute and a half. The Gaels shot 40% from the field and matched their season high with nine made three-pointers but turned the ball over 25 times for their second highest total of the season.
Edie Clarke led the team, averaging 12.5 points while shooting 66.7% from the field. Clarke led the team with 14 points against RV Oregon Ducks on Tuesday and then added 11 points and 8 rebounds in their double-overtime loss to North Texas. She's averaging 9.9 points, 5.5 rebounds and over three steals per game through her eight games.
Beyond the Bosxscore…
After their winless week in Frisco, the Gaels have now dropped three straight and are 5-3 on the season. Despite the losing streak during their toughest stretch thus far of their non-conference schedule, Saint Mary's had a very real path to a continued undefeated start as they entered the fourth quarter with the game tied in each of their three losses. The Gaels overcame a 16-point first half deficit and went on an 11-0 scoring run to end the first half and start the third quarter to take a five-point lead. The quarter would end with the game tied at 49 but Cal would catch fire from beyond the arc and knock down their free throws to seal an 8-point victory.
In similar fashion, Saint Mary's entered the fourth quarter tied in both games in the Hoopfest Challenge, 46-46 against the Ducks and 42-42 against the Mean Green of North Texas. Oregon went into the week receiving votes in the national poll and after another slow start to the game, Saint Mary's shot a combined 53.5% over the second and third quarter to knot the game at 46. A 25-7 fourth quarter though in favor of the Ducks would provide for a lopsided 18-point defeat for the Gaels.
In their first ever matchup with North Texas, Saint Mary's would dictate much more of that game, leading for 28 minutes compared to 16 for the Mean Green, and enter the fourth quarter with the game tied at 42. The Gaels were just 3-for-11 from the field over the final ten minutes of regulation though, letting North Texas back into the game as they converted a transition layup to tie the game with 49 seconds remaining. Saint Mary's made just one field goal in the second overtime period and missed a pair of crucial free throws down the stretch that helped flip the game in favor of the Mean Green.
One common factor to these late-game defeats for the Gaels, turnovers. Saint Mary's continues to score at an efficient clip, shooting 43% from the field and 72% from the free throw line, but they are averaging nearly 20 turnovers per game and failing to maximize possessions. North Texas had nine more shot attempts and those extra possessions proved critical with a two-point victory for the Mean Green. The Gaels still lead the WCC in defense, allowing just 54.1 points per game and have shown they can compete with anyone, but they'll have to clean up the turnovers in order to flip some of these L's to W's.
Stars in Frisco…
Edie Clarke led the team during the Hoopfest Challenge, averaging 12.5 points on 66.7% shooting as she continues to showcase her versatility on both ends of the floor. Clarke also led the Gaels with 13 combined rebounds and four steals over her two games as she leads the conference with 27 steals.
Addi Wedin got the start against Oregon and finished with just three points on 1-4 shooting but bounced back nicely off the bench against North Texas, leading Saint Mary's with 16 points, 8 rebounds and a whopping 40 minutes of action. Wedin drilled three triples in the game and hit some clutch shots in the second half to keep the game close.
Jada Hunter also bounced back nicely after the Oregon game to put up eleven points and a career high three three-pointers against North Texas. Georgia Grigoropoulou was also a much needed spark off the bench for the Gaels in their game against the Ducks, helping lead their second quarter surge with nine points and a couple boards in her ten minutes of action. She was a perfect 3-for-3 from the field and 3-for-3 from the charity stripe as well.
Series History…
Saint Mary's will take on national powerhouse USC for the first time since December of 2022. In that road matchup for the Gaels, the Trojans held Saint Mary's to just 45 points for the 26-point victory. Prior to that though, Saint Mary's recorded a pair of wins over USC in back-to-back seasons in 2013 and 2014, giving them an all-time record of 2-1 over the Trojans.
Saint Mary's had an impressive 12-0 record over San Jose State all-time dating back to 1988, but saw that unbeaten streak come to an end last season after a 46-51 road defeat to the Spartans. Nine of the Gaels twelve wins over SJSU have come by double digits as the Gaels will look for their first road win in San Jose since 2022.
ABOUT THE TROJANS (5-2, 0-0 Big10)
After a dominant 31-win season in 2025 and capturing their first ever Big Ten regular season title, USC was picked to finish fourth in this year's Big Ten preseason poll. The Trojans defeated UCLA in the regular season finale to win their first conference regular season title since 1994 and went on to advance all the way to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament before falling to eventual National Champs UCONN to end their historic season. Despite the absence of college star JuJu Watkins as she recovers from a knee injury suffered in the NCAA Tournament, USC was still picked to finish fourth in the preseason poll and enter the week at 16 in the nation with a 5-2 record.
After a dominant season opening win over New Mexico State, the Trojans made a statement with a one-point victory over 9th ranked NC State in the Ally Tipoff. The following week, they fell 52-69 to Dawn Staley's second ranked South Carolina squad for their first defeat of the season. The Trojans handled WCC member Portland the week after before another narrow defeat, falling 59-61 to 24th ranked Notre Dame. Dominant wins against Tennessee Tech and Pepperdine bring the Trojans to 5-2 overall with a quality non-conference slate against three ranked opponents.
USc is averaging over 70 points per game but are also getting it done on the defensive end, holding opponents to just 56.1 points per game good for 54th in the country. The Trojans also possess great rim protectors as they rank 8th in the country with 6.9 blocks per game thanks to Jazzy Davidson who leads the team with 16 blocks. Offensively, USC has four players in double figures including Davidson who leads the team with 16.3 points per game. Kara Dunn follows with nearly 12 points per game while Londynn Jones and Kennedy Smith are averaging 11.0 and 10.4 points per game respectively.
ABOUT THE SPARTANS (0-5, 0-0 MW)
San Jose State enters the week with a much different story, winless through their first five games with all five defeats being decided by double-digits. The Spartans defeated Jessup in an exhibition game back in October, 91-84, but have since lost all countable games including BYU, Cal Baptist, UC Santa Barbara, Pepperdine and most recently Portland State. San Jose will take on 22nd ranked Washington tonight at 6:00 PM before hosting the Gaels on Thursday at 7:00 PM. The Spartans were picked to finish 12th in the 2025 Mountain West preseason poll after recording just three conference wins during the 2024-25 season.
The Spartans are only averaging 56.4 points per game while allowing 73.0 points per game over their five-game start. SJSU is shooting over 70% from the free throw line and averaging over 13 free throws per game. Rylei Waugh and Maya Anderson are the two double-digit scorers for the Spartans with Waugh averaging 12.6 points and 11.2 for Anderson. Both players get it done on the glass as well, leading the team with 6.6 boards per game.
