GAELS OUTLOOK
Gaels Take Down Cowgirls at 7,220 Feet of Elevation…
7,720 feet above sea level, the Saint Mary's women's basketball team went into Laramie and took down Wyoming 56-47 for the season opening victory. It was a defensive battle all night long but the Gaels got aggressive in the fourth to put up 21 points while holding the Cowgirls to just 12 points over the final ten minutes.
The scoring was spread out for Saint Mary's but their two double-digit scorers came off the bench in Mauriana Hashemian-Orr and Addi Wedin. Orr ran the offense the majority of the second half and was stellar, finishing with 12 points, four boards and a pair of steals. Wedin gave the Gaels a much needed spark from beyond the arc, knocking down two three's including one late in the fourth quarter that put them up seven with two minutes to play. Abigail Shoff finished with eight points while Jada Hunter also shined off the bench with nine points, five rebounds and two steals.
The win in Laramie was the first since November of 2015 as the Gaels have now won two of their last three season openers under head coach Jeff Cammon.
Return of Addi Wedin…
Addi Wedin has been a member of the Gaels women's basketball program since 2021 but the Oregon native has gone through her fair share of adversity, missing two seasons over her career with a pair of knee injuries. The redshirt junior made her return to the court Tuesday night in Laramie for her first competition since January of 2024.
Wedin not only returned to competition but she was arguably the player of the game, recording 26 minutes off the bench and leading the team in scoring with 13 points on 3-of-4 shooting. Wedin hit a dagger three with just over two minutes remaining to put the Gaels up seven. She was also 5-for-6 from the free throw line and hit a pair late to help ice the game.
Series History…
Saint Mary's will take on these two DII programs in countable competitions for the first time in nearly four decades. The Gaels played Chico State twice during the 1986-87 season when they were an NAIA institution and dropped both of those games by single-digits. The season prior, they took on San Francisco State and beat the Gators handingly 82-59 in the second game of the 1985-86 season. The Gaels finished that year 19-9 and made it to the NAIA District 3 Playoffs, falling in the first round to Fresno Pacific 66-67.
ABOUT THE WILDCATS (CCAA)
Chico State has been a dominant Division II institution across several sports and competes in the most successful Division II conference in the country in the CCAA. The Wildcats went 24-8 last season and finished third in the conference standings with a record of 17-5. The Wildcats knocked off #2 Cal State Dominguez Hills as well as #15 Cal Poly Pomona throughout the regular season and earned themselves a bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Chico State knocked off 14th ranked Cal Poly Pomona in overtime in the first round of the regional before falling to Central Washington to end their season. The Wildcats are led by long time head coach Brian Fogel who enters his 17th season. Fogel has led the Wildcats to five NCAA Tournaments and boasts an impressive 362-230 record with the program.
ABOUT THE GATORS (CCAA)
San Francisco State had a down year in 2024-25, finishing with a 9-18 overall record and 7-15 in conference play for ninth place. The Gators compete in one of the best Division II women's basketball conferences in the country as the CCAA had three bids to the NCAA Tournament in 2025. The Gators are led by Mone Peoples in her second full season with the program. Peoples had the interim tag removed prior to this season and joined SF State after serving as an assistant for City College of San Francisco dating back to 2022.
