MORAGA, Calif. – Saint Mary's took the floor inside UCU Pavilion for the first time this season and defeated Chico State 67-49 to move to 2-0 on the season. Head coach Jeff Cammon and his squad showcased their calling card once again, holding the Wildcats to under 50 points for the second consecutive game after holding Wyoming to just 47 points in the season opener on Tuesday.
Sophomore forward Edie Clarke showcased her versatility and led the team with 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting. Mauriana Hashemian-Orr and Melesungu Afeaki each had nine points off the bench to contribute to another strong showing from the Gaels bench, outscoring Chico State's 31-13. Seven different players had at least six points for the Gaels as they cruised to the 18-point victory in their home opener.
FIRST HALF SMC 27-27 CHICO
Chico State has been a dominant Division II program for years and they showcased that early in the first half, holding a 13-9 lead after the first quarter. Offense was slow for both squads in the early going but the Wildcats got downhill to earn six free throw attempts and splashed home a three pointer to go up by three with under four to play.
Saint Mary's responded with a near 40% shooting second quarter, making seven field goals to eliminate the deficit going into the half. Just under the seven-minute mark, both teams traded a flurry of three-pointers as both offenses picked up. After Chico State took a 16-15 lead Abigail Shoff answered with a wing three of her own to put the Gaels back on top 18-16.
Under the two-minute mark, Emily Foy and Melesungu Afeaki hit back-to-back jumpers to put the Gaels up by two. Chico State would retake the lead in the final minute but free throws on a pair of hustle plays from Afeaki and Amy Kurkowski would help even the score at 27 going into the break. Clarke led the Gaels with six points and five boards while first-year transfer Georgia Grigoropoulou and Afeaki each had five points.
FINAL SMC 67-49 CHICO
Scoring overall picked up in the second half but the Gaels were able to cash in on back-to-back three pointers from the likes of Abigail Shoff and Edie Clarke, pushing their lead to seven. The Gaels went on to outscore the Wildcats 19-12 in the quarter, shooting 40% form the field and 5-of-6 from the free throw line.
The lead hit double digits for the first time on the night to start the fourth quarter thanks to an Amy Kurkowski three pointer. Both sides of the ball started to click in the fourth quarter as the Gaels had their best offensive quarter, scoring 21 points on 42% shooting. Defensively, they held Chico State to just three made field goals over the final ten minutes and forced a game high eight turnovers in the period.
As the offense continues to gel, Cammon and his squad have shown great defensive intensity and versatility, flipping between man and zone throughout their first two games of the season. Saint Mary's has allowed just 48 points per game over their first two games of the season and are forcing 21 turnovers, finishing the night against Chico State with 22.
