SAN JOSE, Calif. — The Gaels (5-3) defeated NorCal non-conference foes San Jose State (1-6) and UC Davis (4-3) at Spartan Beach today to close out the Battle of the Bay early season event with a 3-1 record. Saint Mary's cruised to a 4-1 victory over the Spartans, before having another match come down to the wire against UC Davis, persevering to their fourth 3-2 win of the year.
In the opening match of the day, the Gaels rattled off four straight wins to secure the victory, ultimately dropping the five pair, but still earning their fourth victory of the year. Paired for the second time this year, Genevieve Bane and Hannah Glick started things off with their first win together, followed by wins from Nya Crump/Chloe Swanson and Sedona Sherman/Angelina Bour to secure the W. The Gaels most successful pair this year, Hannah Couch and Allie Cataldo added a win for good measure, moving to 5-2 on the year.
Game two of the day was much tighter against the Aggies. Again, Bane/Glick and Crump/Swanson opened things with wins and the four and two spots respectively. The Aggies came storming back however with wins at spots three and five, leaving things up to the ones on either side to close things out. Luckily for the Gaels, it was Couch and Cataldo who continued their tremendous start to the season, outlasting the Aggies in the first set 25-23 before running away with things in set two, 21-14.
Cataldo and Couch went 3-1 on the weekend for the Gaels, while Bane and Glick went 2-1 in their debut weekend together. After going winless yesterday, Nya Crump and Chloe Swanson went 2-0 today.
The Gaels will next head to Waikiki Beach to take part in the Heinken Queen's Cup, taking place from March 6 - March 8.
