MORAGA, Calif. — Back on their home courts for just the third and fourth times this season, the Saint Mary's Gaels (19-14) sent their seniors off with a smile, defeating Sacramento State (7-17) 3-2 and Pacific (1-20) 5-0 to complete a perfect 4-0 home record for the year. The Gaels now move to 11-3 all-time at home under the direction of third year Head Coach Janice Harrer. This is the second consecutive season that Coach Harrer's squad has reached the 19 win mark.
The day got started with yet another tight matchup with Sacramento State. Angelina Bour and Nya Crump started things off with an emphatic 21-14, 21-9 victory, followed by another two set sweep for the Gaels, this time by Genevieve Bane and Grace Travis, 21-15, 21-14. Clarissa Klein and Chloe Swanson built up momentum by taking the first set of the two flight, 21-16, but couldn't find their footing in sets two and three, dropping the three setter to put the Hornets within one. To close things out, the Gaels turned to their ol' reliables, Allie Cataldo and Hannah Couch at the ones, who made quick work of the Sac State top flight 21-7, 21-15, to secure the win. Sacramento State would take the fifth flight to close things out, but the Gaels had already secured their 16th straight win over the Hornets.
Senior day festivities took place before the Gaels regular season finale against the Tigers of Pacific, as the Gaels honored Chloe Swanson, Sedona Sherman, Hannah Couch and Allie Ctataldo. The celebrations continued on the court, as the Gaels picked up the 5-0 sweep of the Tigers to finish out their regular season on a high note. Of note in this one, Delaney Nicholls and Sedona Sherman paired together for the first time all year, and put together the most lopsided performance of the day, a 21-16, 21-7 domination at the fourth flight. This win marks the 20th straight for the Gaels over Pacific.
As the regular season comes to a close, the Gaels clearly have been led by their first and third flights this season. At the ones, Allie Cataldo and Hannah Couch finish out the regular season at 23-10, playing every single match at first position. At the threes, Nya Crump and Angelina Bour have gone 15-7 together since pairing up in mid-March.
The Gaels will open postseason play on April 24 in Santa Monica at the WCC Championship Tournament. A year ago, the Gaels made it to the conference semifinals before being bounced by WCC runner-up Pepperdine.
