BVB | Gaels Best San Jose State, Win Thriller Over UNC Wilmington to Go 2-0 on Day One of the Heineken Queen’s Cup

HONOLULU, Hawaii — What's better than playing beach volleyball in paradise? Winning in paradise! The Gaels did just that on day one of the Heineken Queen's Cup, defeating San Jose State 4-1 and UNC Wilmington 3-2 to go unbeaten on Thursday. Now at 8-2, the Gaels continue to mirror their 2018 squad, who began their season at 10-2.
The Gaels renewed hostilities with NorCal foe San Jose State, whom they clashed with a week ago in San Jose, now in Hawaii. Saint Mary's made quick work of the Spartans, defeating them 4-1 to get their 2026 Heineken Queen's Cup started on the right foot. Alisia Silverthorn and Annah Legaspi got things going quickly in the fours with a 21-17, 21-11 victory, surging the Gaels ahead 1-0. San Jose State responded by taking the fives, but quick straight set victories from Nya Crump and Angelina Bour at the ones and Bella Reyes and Clarissa Klein at the threes secured the win for the Gaels. Putting the cherry on top of the victory, Hannah Couch and Genevieve Bane shook off a slow first set to win the second flight in three sets. With their 21st win paired together, Bour and Crump moved into the top-10 in program history for winningest all-time pairs.
Squaring off with the Seahawks of UNCW for the first time in program history, the Gaels looked quite evenly matched with the defending Sun Belt runners up. Saint Mary's found themselves in an early 1-0 hole, dropping the top flight, but responded by taking the fourth and fifth flights to take their first lead at 2-1. Hannah Glick and Isla Johnson avenged their defeat from earlier in the day with a 21-18, 21-12 win at the fives, while Alisia Silverthorn and Annah Legaspi won 21-15, 23-21 in the fours to move to 2-0 on the day. Both the second and third flights needed a third set to decide. The Gaels dropped the second flight, as UNCW once again drew level at two apiece, as it all came down to Clarissa Klein and Bella Reyes at the threes. The veteran-freshman duo won a narrow set one 22-20, and dropped an even tighter set two at 23-21. As to be expected the third and match clinching set also needed extra points to decide a winner. Knotted up at 15 all, Klein and Reyes put away the final two points to secure the win for the Gaels.
Saint Mary's will look to keep momentum rolling tomorrow in what will be its toughest day of competition in the three day event, taking on 12th ranked Hawaii and perennial WCC power Pepperdine at 2:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. respectively.
