HONOLULU, Hawaii — The Saint Mary's Gaels continued their blazing hot start, moving to 9-3 on the campaign after a split on day two of the Heineken Queen's Cup, headlined by their first ranked win since 2023, defeating 12th ranked Hawaii, 3-2. After their war of attrition against the Rainbow Wahine, the Gaels fell 4-1 to WCC foe Pepperdine, moving their record in Honolulu to 3-1 with two more matches to go tomorrow.
The Gaels and Rainbow Wahine opened the day with an instant classic, with all five matches going into a third set. Hannah Couch and Genevieve Bane put the Gaels in front from the twos, rebounding from a 21-18 set one loss to win the next two 21-15, 15-11. Hannah Glick and Isla Johnson doubled that lead from the fives, also shaking off a 21-18 set one loss, winning their second and third sets 21-13, 15-7. Hawaii drew level, winning the ones and fours, and once again putting the match on the shoulders of Clarissa Klein and Bella Reyes. Just like yesterday against UNCW, Klein and Reyes stood strong under pressure, and came from behind to win set two 21-15, and the match winning set three 15-8. The win marked the Gaels first win over a ranked opponent since 2023, when they beat 18th ranked Pepperdine, and their highest ranked win since defeating 11th ranked Pepperdine in 2021.
Unfortunately, the Gaels couldn't keep the momentum rolling vs the Waves of Pepperdine, falling 4-1 in their afternoon match against their conference foe. The lone Gaels win in that one came out of the fives from Hannah Glick and Isla Johnson, winning 21-14, 22-20 in straight sets. The win marked Glick's 30th as a Gael, making her one of five active Gaels with at least 30 victories.
The Gaels will wrap up their visit to Hawaii for the Heineken Queen's Cup tomorrow, taking on Chaminade at 1:00 p.m. and Concordia Irvine at 4:45 p.m.
