MGOLF | Gaels Climb Into Red Figures with Strong Finish to Day 1 of WCC Championships

FAIRFIELD, Calif. - The Saint Mary's men's golf team put together a strong finish to day one of the 2026 West Coast Conference golf championships on Friday . The Gaels found themselves outside of the top ten heading into the second round at Green Valley Country Club but they played the final five holes a combined 9-under-par to move up and crack the top-10 after the second round.
The Gaels did shoot 1-under-par in the opening round but sat as high as six-over during round two to fall to as low as eleventh place. The back nine had shown to score better over the course of the day for the entire field and the Gaels would take advantage of that to end the second round, rattling off ten birdies over the final five holes, compared to just five birdies over that stretch in round one. The late surge pushed them into a tie for eighth place with Seattle U at 1-under, just four strokes back of the top-four.
Avery Lazarski and Inigo Izuzquiza both put together 69 (-2) second rounds to lead the charge. Lazarski birdied three of his final four holes to end his second round while Izuzquiza followed suit, birdying four of his final five holes to put him into red figures. Seniors Aidan Lee and Mitchell Hoey were the low shooters for Saint Mary's in round one with Lee carding a 69 (-2) and Hoey a 70 (-1), contributing to an opening round of 1-under-par for the Gaels.
Four of the Gaels' five golfers sit inside the top-40 individually out of the 72 player field including Lazarski in a tie for 16th place at 1-under and Lee at 1-over in a tie for 27th place. Full tournament leaderboards can be found HERE.
The top four teams after round three will advance to the match play portion of the event which will take place on Sunday. Saint Mary's and the rest of the tournament field will tee off Saturday morning at 7:30 a.m. as the Gaels will look to get back to the match play portion of the postseason event for the first time since 2024.
