COEUR d'ALENE, Idaho - The Saint Mary's golf team battled through an up-and-down final round at CDA National Reserve in Coeur d'Alene but found its way to the top, winning its first team championship since winning the El Macero Classic in 2024.Â
Just one team put together a final round in red figures on Tuesday as CDA National Reserve played nearly four strokes over par for the toughest round of the week by far. The Gaels fell to seven-under with a final round of eight-over-par while fellow West Coast Conference member Pacific soared up the leaderboard with a third round score of six-under, even taking the lead at one point late in the round. Inigo Izuzquiza birdied his final two holes to keep the Gaels steady at seven-under while Pacific had a counting score double the par four second and bogey the par five third to put the Gaels back in front and claim their first tournament title of the season.Â
Despite a tough final round, Saint Mary's still hung on for its first team title since the 2023-24 season. A 15-under second round score would prove to be the difference, good for the Gaels' best single round performance since a 17-under second round at last year's Island Resort Intercollegiate. Sam Baumuller put together another solid week with a second place finish at seven-under while Inigo Izuzquiza was the other Gael to finish his three rounds in red figures at two-under. Â Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The morning portion of day one at CDA National Reserve proved tough for the entire field as Washington State was the lone team to finish round one under par. Saint Mary's along with just two other programs finished the morning even par to stay in the mix thanks to a 70 (-2) from Trey Tuyo and a 71 (-1) from Sam Baumuller who paced the Gaels in scoring in their first event just two weeks prior.Â
The afternoon round would tell a completely different story though as the Gaels posted a team score of 15-under-par to catapult themselves into the top spot. Their round of 15-under would be the best team score since a 17-under second round at the Island Resort Intercollegiate last fall. Baumuller continued his hot start to the fall season with a career low 64 (-8) that included seven birdies and an eagle on the par five 17th. The redshirt sophomore would find himself at the top of the individual leaderboard for the second consecutive event sitting at 9-under-par through his two rounds, chasing his first collegiate win. Fellow returner Inigo Izuzquiza had an eagle of his own on the par five seventh to contribute to a 69 (-3) second round while Will Hardy and Trey Tuyo each carded 70's to round out a stellar second round at CDA National Reserve.Â
The third and final round on Tuesday would go down as the toughest of the week, playing nearly four strokes over par for the entire field. Pacific would be the lone school to put together a round under par and even jumped Saint Mary's for the top spot late in the day. Izuzquiza birdied his final two holes to keep the Gaels steady at seven-under while the Tigers had a counting score double bogey and bogey his final two holes to swap places again, and officially give Saint Mary's its first tournament title since 2024. The Gaels had four golfers finish inside the top-20 as well as individual Hudson Vedder who finished inside the top-ten with a career low three round score of three-under-par. Baumuller just missed out on his first individual title yet again, finishing seven-under-par over his three rounds, just one stroke behind individual winner Davis Hartwell from Oregon State.Â
Through two events this season, the Gaels have a fourth place finish and now a tournament victory, the first time they've finished in the top four in their first two events of a season since 2020. Full team and player leaderboards can be found HERE. Â
