Fremont, CA - The Saint Mary's softball team (16-14) fell to Simon Fraser University by a score of 11-1 on Saturday, March 24, in its last pool play game in the Hayward State Softball Tournament.
The Gaels fell behind early, as Simon Fraser jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Saint Mary's was unable to respond, and the Clan added four more runs in the fourth to go ahead 5-0. The Gaels would put one run on the board in the bottom half of the third, following a hit and a stolen base by junior Talaya Turner. Turner would score on an error by first base before the side was retired, making the score 5-1. That was all the offense Saint Mary's could muster, as Simon Fraser went on to add six more runs, ending the game in the fifth inning due to an eight-run mercy rule.
For the Gaels Turner was 1-for-1 with a run scored and a stolen base, while Janelle Yousef and Theresita Alfaro were also 1-for-1. Freshman pitcher Jennifer Eaton picked up the loss for Saint Mary's, dropping her record to 7-6 on the season.
Saint Mary's plays again at 6:00 PM in the championship bracket in Fremont, beginning the single elimination round of the tournament. The Gaels will face UC Davis.
