Moraga, CA (March 28) - The Saint Mary's softball team (17-17) upset Oregon (22-17) by winning the first game of a double header March 28 against the Ducks by a score of 6-5 in nine innings before dropping the second game by a score of 3-2.
Oregon dominated for the first four and a half innings of game one, putting five runs on the board before Saint Mary's had gotten a hit. But the bats came alive in the bottom of the fifth for the Gaels, as a one-out double to left center by senior Holly Ferreira sparked a five-run rally. With the bases loaded, senior Jennifer Fawkes got an infield base hit to score the first run of the inning for Saint Mary's. Senior Jessica Hanaseth knocked in two more runs with a shot up the middle, and sophomore Laura Connors hit in two more with a double off the center field fence to knot the score at 5-5 before the inning was up. Neither team would score again in regulation, sending the game into extra innings.
With a runner starting on second due to the international tie-breaker rule, neither team would score until the bottom of the ninth inning, when Oregon pitcher Connie McMurren overthrew first base on a bunt by Ferreira, allowing sophomore Tiffany Redding to score, and the Gaels to win the game, 6-5.
For Oregon, Missy Coe was 2-for-5 with a homerun, two runs scored, Triawn Custer also homered, while Lisa Wangler was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Andrea Vidlund was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Connie McMurren earned the loss, giving up five hits and five earned runs.
For Saint Mary's, Connors was 1-for-2 with a double and two RBI, Hanaseth was 1-for-3 with two RBI, and Fawkes and Talaya Turner were both 1-for-3, with Fawkes adding an RBI. Freshman pitcher Jennifer Eaton picked up the win, allowing nine hits in nine innings, and striking out six batters. Her record improved to 8-7 with the win.
The Ducks jumped out to an early lead in game two, putting two runs on the board in the first inning. Oregon's starting pitcher, Lisa Wangler, held the Gaels scoreless through three innings, but a pitching change to Andrea Vidlund in the fourth inning for the Ducks led to two runs for the Gaels. Freshman Jenn Arnold hit her first career homerun with Ferreira on base, knotting the score at 2-2. Neither team would score in the fifth inning, but Oregon squeezed a run across in the top of the sixth. A blooper hit into left field by Vidlund, followed by a double into right center by Janell Bergstrom was all the Ducks would need, as they went on to win by a final of 3-2.
Vidlund earned the win for the Ducks, allowing just three hits and striking out four. Alyssa Laux went 3-for-4, and Vidlund and Alicia Mickes doubled.
For Saint Mary's, freshman pitcher Sara Wiedlin earned the loss, dropping her record to 9-7 on the season. Arnold was 1-for-3 with a homerun and two RBI, while Janelle Yousef went 2-for-4.
The Gaels return to action on Thursday, April 5, when they host Oregon State for a single game at Cottrell Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
