
Men's Tennis Cruises Past Portland State 7-0

Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's men's tennis team (9-6) defeated Portland State 7-0 on Thursday afternoon at the Timothy Korth Tennis Complex. The Gaels did not lose a set en route to their fourth straight victory.
Saint Mary's got off to a quick start by winning the doubles point by sweeping the three doubles matches. Frank Schmitt and Boris Vallejo improved their team record to 6-3 with an 8-1 victory over Adam Rothert and Corey Bennett. Arturo Planell and Richard Thomson won their number-one doubles match 8-2 and Thomas Burgemeister and Mark Mowrer won at number-three, 8-3.
The Gaels were perfect in the singles matches by winning all 12 of their sets. The closest any Portland State player got was 6-4, 6-1 in the number-one match, where Planell defeated Michael Thoeresz. Boris Vallejo won his first match of the season with a 6-2, 6-0 victory at the number-two singles. Jafar Al Askari, who was playing in his first match of the season, defeated Cody Hoverstand 6-0, 6-1 at number-six.
The Gaels will return to the courts on Saturday, March 31 when they travel to the University of San Francisco for a non-conference match. First serve is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
