USF bats pounded 15 base hits to go along with three homeruns to propel the Dons to a 15-5 West Coast Conference victory against Saint Mary's Friday at Benedetti Diamond. USF (19-16, 9-8 WCC) won their fifth consecutive game and are undefeated in WCC play on their home diamond. Saint Mary's (13-24, 7-10 WCC) started out hot offensively as Kaazim Summerville launched a lead-off homerun to start the game for the Gaels, but USF freshman right-hander Kevin Rose (4-2) settled down and allowed just two runs off three hits in 4.2 innings of work and struck out five.
Three Dons launched their first long ball of the season as junior catcher Steve Booth tattooed a three-run shot in the seventh, while senior infielder Jared Carvalho also pounded a three-run blast in the Don's five-run sixth inning. Senior outfielder Chad Soares hit a two-run shot in the first for USF. Soares finished his monster day 3-for-4 with a double, homerun and five RBI, while Booth finished 2-for-4 with three RBI. Carvalho ended his day perfect at the plate with a 3-for-3 day to go along with a homerun and three RBI.
Other notables for USF were senior All-American Taggert Bozied and junior outfielder Jeramy Janz, who both went 2-for-5. Bozied now needs just two more hits to become the all-time USF career hits leader and currently has 263. Tony Hurtado (1997-2000) holds the mark for now with 264 in his standout career on the Hilltop.
Gaels starter Kevin Trochez (2-3) suffered the loss for Saint Mary's after allowing six runs (three earned) off seven hits. For USF, junior left-hander Jeremy Kinney pitched 3.1 innings in relief of Rose and allowed just one run off one hit and struck out four. Sophomore right-hander Kevin Annis struck out two in the ninth for the Dons.
Fittingly, both teams struggled mightily defensively on Friday the 13th as both teams were charged with four errors apiece. USF's potent hitting proved more than able to overcome their miscues as they out-hit the Gaels 14-5.
USF and Saint Mary's square off in the final game of the WCC Bay Area battle on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM at Benedetti Diamond.
