MORAGA, Calif. - The Saint Mary's baseball team dropped game two of its three-game regular season series finale with San Francisco, falling 10-3 to the Dons Friday night in Moraga. The Gaels chipped away at the lead with single runs in three consecutive innings but the Dons used two pitchers on the night, holding the Gaels to three runs off four hits to clinch the series victory.
Ian Armstrong connected on his conference leading 13th home run of the season with a solo shot in the sixth inning. Diego Castellanos finished his night 1-for-4 but extended his hit streak to an incredible 29 games. Makoa Sniffen and Nick Allred had the other two extra-base hits for the Gaels, each recording a double with Sniffen's in the first and Allred's coming in the fifth.
Saint Mary's (29-24, 14-12 WCC)did officially lock up the fifth seed in the 2026 West Coast Conference tournament and will await its opponent after the final conference game on Saturday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Sophomore right hander Sam Kretsch made his fifth start and team high 19th appearance of the season Friday night but San Francisco (24-27, 15-11 WCC) had more of the same going from Thursday night, scoring seven runs off ten hits over the first three innings. Saint Mary's stopped the bleeding with a run in the fourth inning after loading the bases and went on to score three runs over three consecutive innings.
Ian Josephson helped plate a run with a ground ball out in the fourth, followed by an RBI ground out in the fifth from Cody Kashimoto and then finally a solo home run from Ian Armstrong in the sixth to give the Gaels three runs. The solo homer for Armstrong would give him the WCC lead with 13 on the season. A two-RBI double in the ninth though would help extend the Dons lead to 10-3 as USF reliever Quentin Pohorski would retire the Gaels in order in the bottom half of the inning to clinch the series win.
Diego Emerling and Luis Martin Romero helped piece together the final six innings of the ballgame, allowing a combined three runs off seven hits with two of those runs coming as unearned. Emerling finished his outing with a career high three innings and five strikeouts while Romero finished the final three frames, allowing just four hits and zero earned runs in his 16th appearance of the season.
