BSB | Gaels Reach 30 Wins with Senior Day Victory over USF
5/16/2026 6:37:00 PM | Baseball
MORAGA, Calif. - The Saint Mary's baseball team got a sweet Senior Day victory on Saturday, salvaging the series finale with a 6-4 victory over San Francisco (24-28, 15-12 WCC) to record win number 30 on the season. The Gaels put together timely scoring and quality pitching to hold the Dons to a series low four runs and go into the 2026 West Coast Conference tournament with a win.
Sophomore southpaw Talin Gardini got the start as an opener for the Gaels and completed the first three frames scoreless, allowing just three hits with a pair of strikeouts. Gardini's quality start would earn himself his first win of the 2026 season as the Gaels offense got going early with four runs over the first three innings. Senior Jared Mettam capped off the three-run first inning with a two-out RBI single to score Brady Petit. Saint Mary's (30-24, 15-12 WCC) led by as many as six runs and then got some clutch back-end bullpen work from Jake Hilton and David Roberts as the duo finished off the game with a combined four innings of work, allowing just one run off one hit to seal the two-run victory.
Roberts has been nails out of the closer spot the last few weeks of the season as he pitched the final two innings to earn his second save of the year. Jacob Johnson got back in the lineup and went 2-for-4 including a solo home run in the fifth for his 12th long ball of the season. Tanner Griffith also went 2-for-5 with a double and two runs scored and Diego Castellanos extended his hit streak to 30 games with a bunt single in the third inning.
Saint Mary's is locked into the fifth seed in the WCC tournament and will officially face off with four-seed Pepperdine in the night game on Wednesday. Full tournament information and bracket can be found at wccsports.com.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Saint Mary's had fallen behind in each of the first two games of the series but got ahead early on Saturday, plating three runs in the first inning. The Gaels got two hits in the frame but also took advantage of a USF error. Brady Petit put a ball in play to score Griffith for the game's first run and then an errant back pick from the Dons catcher would get into right field and allow Castellanos to score from third. The third run of the inning would come off the bat of four-year senior Jared Mettam, rifling a single into right field to score Petit and record his 26th RBI of the season.
Mettam was back at it again in the fourth with a leadoff triple to right center for his first of the season. Nick Allred would then drive him home with a sacrifice fly to put Saint Mary's up 5-0. The lead would grow to six with a solo shot from Jacob Johnson in the fifth. The near 400-foot shot would go down as his 12th of the season, just one off the conference lead and teammate Ian Armstrong who leads the WCC with 13 on the year.
San Francisco would get to Max Johnson in the sixth and plate three runs but senior Jake Hilton would get the Gaels out of a huge jam, recording a strikeout and then a fly ball double play with a stellar throw from Griffith in center to gun down the runner at home and end the threat, maintaining a 6-3 lead going into the seventh.
David Roberts made his 18th appearance of the season and got called on in the middle of the eighth in a similar situation as Hilton was called into in the sixth. The Dons had two runners on with no outs but Roberts induced a ground ball double play to allow one run in and then got the next batter to pop up and limit the damage to just one run. Roberts remained in the game for the ninth and got the six-out save with back-to-back strikeouts to emphatically end the game.
