Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's women's soccer team (5-6-1) was defeated by the #2 North Carolina Tarheels (10-0-2), 3-0, on Sunday, October 6 in the final day of the Saint Mary's Fall Classic.
The Tarheels wasted little time to take a 1-0 lead when Lori Chalupney fired a shot that hit the post and dropped in at the 2:13 minute mark. Assist earned by Susan Bush. UNC recorded another goal in the first half, this time it was Maggie Tomecka who scored on a beautiful header at the 12:11 minute mark. Assist again was earned by Bush. At the end of the first half the Tarheels led 2-0, while outshooting the Gaels 10-4.
The Tarheels increased their lead in the second half when Alyssa Ramsey scored at the 83:08 minute mark on an assist from Lindsay Tarpley, making the final score 3-0.
The Gaels had a few opportunities but were unable to connect on any shots in the second half. During the contest the Tarheels outshot the Gaels 20-6.
SMC goalkeeper Ruth Montgomery finished the game with seven saves, while UNC's Aly Winget tallied three saves in the contest
In the first game of the day the #1 Stanford Cardinal cruised past the Tulane Green Waves, 3-0. With the win Stanford improves to 9-1, while Tulane drops to 3-7-1 on the season.
Leading the way offensively for the Cardinal's was Jennifer Farenbaugh who tallied one goal and one assist. Also scoring for the Cardinal was Marcie Ward, who scored her sixth goal of the season and the game's eventual game-winner. Natalie Sanderson was the last to score for Stanford as she connected at the 89:39 minute mark.
The Cardinal's outshot Tulane 25-2 in the contest. Stanford's goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart tallied one save, while Tulane's Kristin Weegar recorded four saves.
The Gaels will return to non-conference action when they host Long Beach State on Thursday, October 10 on Garaventa Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
