DAVIS, Calif. (AP) - Matt Massari rushed for 180 yards and two touchdowns as UC Davis overcame five turnovers Saturday for its seventh straight victory, 31-28 over St. Mary's.
St. Mary's (5-5) took its first lead on Trevor Johnston's 2-yard touchdown run with 10:46 left, but Ryan Flanigan's 14-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Freeman pushed the Aggies (7-1) back ahead.
The Gaels got three interceptions by Greg Kavulich before he was ejected, and they failed on two late scoring chances. With 29 seconds left, fullback Clint Wilson's fumble at the Davis 25 was recovered by Kelly Valaau. St. Mary's kicker Ezequiel Arevalo also missed a 46-yard field goal with 3:32 left.
The Aggies, ranked fifth in Division II, avenged a 28-21 loss to the Gaels in 2001. Division I-AA St. Mary's hasn't beaten its local rivals in consecutive games since 1924.
Massari, coming off a 221-yard performance in a 28-14 win over Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo, now has 1,094 yards rushing. The Aggies have won 21 of their last 23 home games and 11 of their last 13 against I-AA opponents.
Flanigan threw a 16-yard TD pass to Christian Nordhausen to cap an early nine-play, 98-yard drive for the Aggies, but two interceptions in the second quarter by Kavulich ignited the Gaels, who scored on a pair of short TD runs by Johnston.
Wilson, who rushed for 95 yards, tied it 21-21 with a 32-yard TD run midway through the third quarter. Johnston's three touchdowns and 136 yards passing were season highs.
Kavulich was ejected with 5:16 left in the third quarter for taking a swing at Davis' Aaron Plunkett.
