MARICOPA, Ariz. - The Saint Mary's men's golf team bounced back for a solid second day at the 2026 Wyoming Cowboy Classic in Arizona on Tuesday, jumping three spots after the opening day on Monday to finish alone in sixth place.
The Gaels had only gotten through a handful of holes from the second round after it was suspended due to darkness on Monday, but they came out firing this morning, to put up an 8-under team performance for the second best score of the second round. They jumped all the way into fourth place with the third round left to play. The back nine gave SMC golfers fits on Monday, but they eliminated crucial mistakes to play a cleaner back nine Tuesday morning, before attacking the front, where they combined to shoot 7-under-par over their four counting scores.
Avery Lazarski was the low man in the second round, posting a bogey free 68 (-4) for his best round of the week. Behind him were teammates Sam Baumuller and Inigo Izuzquiza, who each carded a 70 (-2), while Aidan Lee was the fourth counting score in the second round, at even par.
In the third round, Saint Mary's put together its best performance on the back nine this week at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes, combining to shoot 4-under and put itself inside the top five of the tournament field. They would stumble coming into the clubhouse though, with a 3-over front nine to finish the third and final round at 1-under-par. Despite falling a couple spots into sixth place, the Gaels still placed ahead of No. 45 South Florida and No. 42 San Diego to represent the top West Coast Conference team in the field.
Lazarski capped off a stellar day of golf with a 69 (-3) in his third round to place sixth individually at 8-under-par over his three rounds. Baumuller recorded his seventh top-20 finish of the season, concluding his three rounds at 3-under. Lee was the next best finisher for the Gaels in 33rd place at 1-under for the week. Head coach Scott Hardy and his group have finished inside the top six in all but three events this season as they continue to build momentum heading into the final two tournaments of the regular season.
