Softball Splits Second Day of Tournament Action

Moraga, CA- The Saint Mary's softball team (6-20) lost to Long Island (5-12) by a score of 5-3 on Friday, March 15 in their first game of the day at the Annual Capital Classic Softball Tournament in Sacramento, CA. In the second game, the Gaels shutout Utah State (2-18), 1-0.
Long Island took an early lead in the top of the first inning in the first game as it scored three runs off of one hit from pitcher Jennifer Eaton. The Gaels responded in the bottom of the inning as Tiffany Redding doubled. With Redding in scoring position, Laura Connors hit a single to give the Gaels their first run of the game.
Talaya Turner tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning with a two-run double, but in the top of the sixth inning Long Island added two more runs to capture the win.
Connors remains the top hitter for the Gaels as she went 2-for-3 at the plate with one RBI. Eaton suffered the loss for the Gaels as she gave up five runs on six hits, with two walks and four strikeouts.
In the second game, the Gaels shutout Utah State (2-18), 1-0. Pitchers Jordan Larsen and Lindsay Janssen remained in a scoreless battle through three innings. The Gaels scored the first run of the game off of an RBI single from Redding. Redding went 1-for-2 at the plate with one RBI, while Kami Gray went 2-for-3.
Tournament action will continue for the Gaels on Saturday, March 16.
