Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's women's lacrosse team (0-5) suffered a 9-7 loss to Columbia University (4-1) on Monday afternoon from Saint Mary's Stadium in Moraga.
In this physical game that produced eight yellow cards, one red card and two player ejection's, Columbia outlasted Saint Mary's for a 9-7 win. Maggie Via connected with Liz Gilroy at the 6:08 mark and Via then found Adie Moll at the 9:45 mark. Gilroy scored an unassisted goal at the 17:32 mark to give Columbia a 3-0 lead.
Saint Mary's tallied its first score at the 19:02 mark when Megan Bryan, the Gaels leading scorer, scored on a free possession shot. Moll scored her second goal just 24 seconds later to keep the Lions lead at three goals. The Gaels' Liz Roberts hit a cutting Colette Spencer to cut the lead to 4-2, but Columbia's Michelle Kraics, answered for a 5-2 lead. Bryan converted another free possession opportunity to cut the lead to 5-3 with just under three minutes until the intermission. That was the final goal for Bryan as she would receive a red card with just over a minute remaining in the half, ending her day.
The Lions found the net early in the second half, scoring two goals in the first three minutes to take a commanding 7-3 lead. However, Saint Mary's scored two straight goals, by Ally Back and Christy Davidge, to get within two with 20 minutes left to play. The teams swapped goals over the remaining 20 minutes, resulting in a 9-7 Columbia win.
Also scoring for the Gaels was Thera Luce and Regan Lebherz, each tallying one goal. Megan Ceccotti suffered the loss in net for Saint Mary's, tallying 11 saves while allowing eight goals. Katie Augustine played the final 7:30 in net for SMC posting two saves and allowing one goal.
For Columbia Amy Galbraith and Ellen Lowrey tallied two scores, each, in the second half. Jessica Valadez played the entire game in net for the Lions, posting 12 saves while allowing seven goals.
Saint Mary's returns to action on Saturday, March 23 when the Gaels host Regis University. The game with begin at 11:00 am in Saint Mary's Stadium.
