
Men's Tennis Continues Successes At 2003 Bulldog Classic

Fresno, CA- The Saint Mary's men's tennis team continued its successes at the 2003 Bulldog Classic on Saturday, October 11. The Gaels posted an overall record of 3-4 in singles play and 1-3 in doubles action.
Leading the way for Saint Mary's on the second day of the 2003 Bulldog Classic were a trio of players participating on Flight B of the singles tournament. Adam Fauvre opened the day for Saint Mary's with a quarterfinal match against UNLV's Romain Massaro. Unfortunately, the freshman was eventually downed by the final score of (7-6, 6-0).
Winning both of his matches on the day, and ultimately advancing to the Flight B finals the following day was Andre Sion. The sophomore was victorious in his quarterfinal match over Michael Duong (6-2, 6-3). In his next and quarterfinal match, the sophomore took on teammate Martin Marechal who defeated Santa Clara's Kevin McQuaid (1-6, 6-4, 6-3) to advance to the semifinal. In their semifinal match, Sion emerged victorious over Marechal (5-4 [15-15] ret.) to advance to the finals of Flight B the following day.
In Flight C singles action, J.J. Whitlinger played a tough opponent in Marko Blagojevic of UNLV. Unfortunately, the junior was ultimately defeated in a long and close match (3-6, 7-5, 6-3).
With his play the previous day, Timothy Welty advanced to the quarterfinals of Flight C were he was scheduled to take on Eric Pickard of Oregon. Through a hard-fought and lengthy match, Welty gave everything he had before falling to Pickard (6-2, 6-7, 6-4).
In doubles action, the Gaels lone victory came at the hands of teammates Andre Sion and J.J. Whitlinger. The tandem took on Nevada's Leuscher and Sieh were they handly defeated the pair (8-0). However, in their following match, the Sion/Whitlinger were defeated by Hogan and O'Shea of USF (Default).
Also participating in the Flight B of the doubles tournament were Timothy Welty and Dino Ferrari. Unfortunately, the tandem were defeated in both of their matches on the day. Firstly, against Nevada's tandem of Popovic/Volger the Gaels' pair were defeated by the final score of 8-6. In their second and final match, the pair were defeated by Bartels/McMakin of UC Davis by the final score of 8-5.
