Joe Lanza Earns Individual Berth In NCAA Tournament

Moraga, CA - On Monday, the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Committee selected the 81 teams and 18 individuals to participate in the 2004 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships. Saint Mary's junior Joe Lanza (Bainbridge Island, WA) earned an individual at-large berth to compete in this year's tournament. Lanza's quest for an individual national title will begin on Thursday, May 20 at the Crosswater Club at Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, OR. The Western Regional will be a three-round, three-day event and will conclude on Saturday, May 22.
"Joe is very deserving of an individual bid to the NCAA Tournament for his strong play the past two seasons," said head coach Scott Hardy. The 2004 West Coast Conference Coach of the Year also said, "Joe should do very well against the competition in the Western Regional."
Lanza becomes the first player in the 33-year history of the Saint Mary's men's golf program to compete in the NCAA Tournament. Lanza's last tournament was April 12-13 where he finished third overall in the WCC Tournament at Riverbend Golf Course in Madera, CA. Lanza helped the Gaels post at second place finish at the conference tournament, marking the best finish by SMC in the 20-year history of the WCC Tournament.
Lanza was named to this year's WCC First Team for the second straight year. This year he set a single season school record with a 73.0 stroke average. He recorded six top-10 individual finishes, in 10 events, and finished the regular season ranked 103 in the country by Golfstat.
Three regional tournaments, encompassing the current nine regions, will be conducted May 20-22. A total of 27 teams and six individuals have been selected for each regional competition with 10 teams and two individuals advancing from each regional to the championships finals. The top two individual from the remaining 17 teams and the six individual regional selections will advance to the finals.
