
Men's Tennis Wraps Up Season With Awards Ceremony

Moraga, CA- The Saint Mary's men's tennis team put a cap to its most successful season in nearly three years with an end of the year awards ceremony. The awards presented by West Coast Conference Coach of the Year, Michael Wayman were most valuable player, most dedicated, most inspirational, most improved and an award for team captain.
Sophomore Andre Sion was awarded the most valuable player after posting a 17-5 record, with eight wins coming at the No. 1 position. At one point in the season Sion caught fire by winning 13 out of 14 matches with eight of them coming at the No. 1 spot. After conclusion to the WCC Championship, Sion was named to the WCC All-Conference Team.
The most dedicated award went to senior Rafael Lopez. Lopez who also won the Team Captain award helped the maturation process of a team that was predominately underclassmen. On the season Lopez posted a 5-17 singles record and a 9-9 doubles record.
Junior J.J. Whitlinger was named most inspirational after posting a 5-7 record despite battling injuries all season long. Whitlinger, who was selected All-WCC Doubles Honorable Mention during the 2002-03 campaign, combined to post a 7-16 doubles record this season.
Most improved player was awarded to sophomore Timothy Welty. Welty posted a singles 2-2 record and a 1-1 doubles record. The Walnut Creek native saw action in the Gaels' 4-0 victory over Gonzaga in the WCC Championship.
