3/7/2026 8:05:00 PM | Men's Tennis
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Saint Mary's concluded the Golden Gate Invite with a familiar foe, facing off against Big West member UC Davis for the second time in the past six weeks. The Gaels defeated the Aggies 4-3 in a true road contest back on January 24, and were able to sweep the season series with a 4-2 win Saturday afternoon in Sacramento to earn their sixth win of the 2026 season.
The Gaels were dominant again in the doubles portion of the match, clinching the point with wins from Finn Dyer/Thibaud Maxant and Paulo Hugo Etchecoin/Juan Pedro Etchecoin. The Etchecoin brothers finished the weekend undefeated as a doubles pair as they clinched the doubles point on Friday against No. 73 Hawaii. They are now 4-4 as a doubles pair this season while Maxant and Dyer improved to a team best 6-4.
In singles play, Maxant fought hard to end his dual unfinished while Paulo Hugo Etchecoin and Francisco Duran clinched their singles match with straight set wins, putting Saint Mary's one point away from the match victory. Senior Pierre Lieutaud got some nice run this weekend, playing in both matches, and he cashed in on the opportunity with a thrilling three-set victory on Saturday to give Saint Mary's the 4-2 win. Lieutaud won the first and third set to improve to 3-0 in singles play this season.
Duran won his second dual of the 2026 campaign while Paulo Hugo Etchecoin got above .500 with his win, now sitting at 5-4 in singles play for the season. Saint Mary's secured back-to-back dual match victories over UC Davis for the first time in over a decade.
LOOKING AHEAD
Saint Mary's has two more non-conference matches before starting WCC action on March 28 against Pepperdine. The Gaels will travel to Berkeley to take on Cal next Friday. Additional match information and live scoring can be found at smcgaels.com.
