Moraga, CA - After his team experienced unprecedented success this past season, Saint Mary's men's golf coach Scott Hardy found time to garner his own accolades on the golf links when he captured the Northern California Golf Association's Stroke-Play Championship on Sunday at the Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach.
Going into the par-5 18th with a one-stroke lead over veteran Casey Boyns, Hardy needed to sink a five foot birdie putt after Boyns put on the pressure after nailing a 12-footer. Hardy prevented the playoff and sealed his first NCGA major championship by dropping the putt to capture his 10th amateur victory and move into the third place on the NCGA rankings.
"I usually get nervous in situations like that but I was really comfortable out there," Hardy said. "I've come close so many times, it feels good to wrap one up."
Hardy finished the three-day tournament with a 73-70-68-211 (-5) on the par-72 course, one stroke ahead of Boyns' 72-72-68-212.
The 2004 West Coast Conference Coach of the Year started the day at 1-under par. At the turn Hardy was tied with Boyns for second, one-stroke behind William Moore who was the leader at 3-under. Moore fell off the pace after hitting his second shot on the par-5 10th into the water. Hardy parred the 10th and followed with a 12-foot birdie putt on the par-3 11th. He then two-putted for a birdie on the par-5 12th to catapult into his first lead of the championship, one he would never relinquish.
Hardy birdied 14 and parred 15, but found some trouble when he bunkered twice on 16 settling for only his second bogey on the round. Hardy quickly recovered with a par on 17 and then reached the par-5 18th in two. On top of a slope on the green Hardy putted within five feet on his eagle attempt and sank his birdie attempt to capture the championship.
Hardy's name joined the likes of Ken Venturi, Johnny Miller, George Archer, and Tal Smith on the trophy that resides in the Poppy Hills clubhouse.
